Apple IPAD Owner's Thread

BREAKING NEWS:

FAA announced today they are considering review of use of Apple ipad and Kindle for use in the no electronics restriction from doors closed to 10,000ft.

Seems that as of last year, Pilots have been using ipads in the cockpit on a regular basis with no incident of interference. There has been increasing demand for this use by passengers ever since it became known that pilots were using ipads regularly. Kindles are the second most popular device no in flight so FAA will also be considering those as well.
What about smartphones and music players: FAA said they are not considering those at this time because there are too many brands and models to test. So for the time, phones and music players will continue to be banned.

Personally, I don't understand how a cell phone can work at 35,000 ft flying at 450 mph. It doesn't mesh with the technology of "cells" How will the switching network manage your tower switch? Then there's the social issues of callers annoying other passengers if it does work. I see no benefit to cell phone use while flying.

Wow, an intelligent move by the FAA. Whoda thunk it? I think removing the iPad/Kindle restriction makes good sense. Also makes for happier customers. :)

Bring your own drinks if you must get plastered. Much cheaper isn't it?

I find it quite annoying I have to shut off my electronics. Never made any sense. I always considered it harassment.

BTW- I operate my video camcorder all the time. My rule is it's better to say I'm sorry, than to ask for permission, which is always denied. (I get the shot). I think if ipad is the only electronic device OK to turn on during takeoff, I just may use that camera if I have the window seat. :)

It's about time! I just can't believe that a Kindle or an iPad can possible cause any problem to a plane!

My thought is, if personal electronic devices might harm an airplane, they'd better be fixing their airplanes.

And good luck bringing your own booze onboard. Tiny, tiny quantities only.

Actually, you can carry as many 3.4 oz bottles as will fit in a 1 Qt ziplock plastic bag.

But here's one fact that I find odd. It appears this is the restriction for going through security as I have carried much larger bottles of water and cola in plain sight aboard the aircraft with jno restriction whatsoever. I do not carry those through security as they will get confiscated. Instead, I purchase those in the stores after going through security and carry them on board. While I don't drink, I have seen others buying booze in the bars after security in the same manner and carrying them on board. The whole issue is pure nonsense and has nothing to do with real security.

The issue with cell phones is that even if there are no towers to be found, they keep trying. I wouldn't want to be the flight attendant that has to explain to each phone owner how to put the phone in "airplane mode".

Supposedly, the liquids that can purchased after a check point have been pre screened and determined safe.

Let's get back to the iPad... :D

Each time I use mine, I am still amazed at the quality of the text. It makes reading so pleasurable. I'd say that Apple serious raised the ante for everybody else, and I wonder how far away any of the other tablet manufacturers are to matching that resolution quality.

For reading, hours at a time, my eyes still prefer Kindle or paper books.

But this display does look amazing! I just installed a couple of retina wallpapers from the Internet (2048x2048 ) Wow!
Also watched a digital copy of a movie. Looks fantastic! I can't wait to take this iPad with me on my next flight. :)

I think I will have to reload all of my photo albums though. This time without compressing the photos.
I am glad I went with a 64GB version. Uncompressed photos and HD movies will take a lot of space!

By the way, does anyone know if there is a way to tweak the monitor settings on the iPad?
Anything except for brightness? Color temperature, for example?

I used to think that about the eyes, but having spent a LOT of hours the past five days on the new iPad, I am not so sure anymore. The resolution is so good, it has not been an issue at all. I think the key is finding the right screen brightness. BUT of course, outside, Kindle e-reader still gets the win. The glare of the glass makes the iPad difficult to use in bright-sunshine. And when there is bright-sunshine I need to have polarized glasses on, and that means I can only view the iPad in Landscape mode.

Once I get into "normal" usage patterns it will be interesting to see how long I get on a charge. I was going 2-3 days without charging my iPad 2, so far I've been getting about 2 on the new iPad. But I've used it a LOT.

Now if Apple will only come out with the retina display for my MacBook Air! :D

3 oz. or less. :)

And navy, WHEN do you get YOUR own iPad??

The only way that could happen in the near future is if bought by work. And the guy that suggested it to me has now "forgotten." So, not meant to be, I guess.

Besides, I've come to realize that the iPad 2012 (;)) comes with 3/4 of a virus. The first fourth was in the iPhone. Now that they're together, and a whole virus, which I refer to as the Don Landis virus, I have this difficult to control urge to go out and buy Apple stock.......... ;)

Even though it can probably run for two days on a single charge, I am going to make it a rule, to charge this iPad every night.
It takes forever (several hours!) to charge this thing! I wouldn't want to be caught with no charge left in the middle of the day!

I m at 29% after two days and will charge when I go to bed. Hopefully it will be done when I get up.

iPad3 Getting Hot?

Not wanting to open another iPad thread, but thought this may be worth mentioning to folks that might take their new iPad outside in hot weather and or direct sunlight. New iPad 3 Overheating Problems When I read what is pictured in the thumbnail I thought about Don Landis out by his pool. I don't have a 3, yet, but thought this may be a few folks just looking for something about the new pad to complain about.

Haven't had any problems at all. It looks like those that do are playing graphic intense games for extended periods and are plugged in. A device is going to het up a bit. Seems like gizmodo is trying to find things to complain about.
