Apple Announces new iPhone 5

sorry to wander off topic on this, isn't the iPad mini something that Saint Jobs proclaimed as the DOA size?
Actually, no. What he said was that given the constraints of screen size and other factors, the currently available 7" tablets were DOA. You'll notice that those tablets are now long gone so he was pretty much correct.

I keep bringing this up but I'm blown away by these Verizon LTE speeds. This was taken in Fenton Michigan at my office.

They are gone because of the natural life cycle of computers and electronics.

And will pick up a lightning USB cable at the Apple Store in Chicago tomorrow. I need a second one. ANNOYING.

Just got out if the Hartford Apple store and they didn't have any and don't expect any until mid October.

I couldn't find any either. Visited several stores. I think I will just order online and will wait.

Couldn't believe the line of people still for the iPhone 5

And while they were around, just how successful were they?

Are you on Wi-Fi or LTE most of the time?

I never had a 4, I had a 4S, so I don't know if we are comparing apples to oranges, so to speak. But I am definitely getting much better battery life than on the 4S. Shockingly so.

No AT&T LTE here yet. Same use pattern as my 4. A lot of WiFi at work and home. When I'm away from WiFi, I do very little Internet over 4G. Listen to music that's cached via Slacker.

And that's why I ordered a Lightning to USB cable for the car when I was up at 3am in the morning. I also ordered an extra charger (mistake) because I didn't think the phone was going to have one. It's Status went to Processing before I could remove it in the morning when I realized what I had done. Which is okay, since I had to send back the iPhone 4 charger and cable with my iPhone 4 when I sent it back to Gazelle.

Actually that revisionist history only applies to a couple sentances. His entire diatraibe decried the mere existance and thought behind any tablets smaller than the iPad, proclaming that it is the minimum size tablets should be. So while he craps all over the underpowered first generation of 7" tablets (and rightfully so), plenty of what he said is completely contradictory toward where Apple appears to be going by introducing the rumored iPad Mini because the balance of his criticism (and not just his, he makes it clear it's "our opinion" - that of Apple's) is directed at anything smaller than 10".

Or perhaps the iPad Minis will come with iSandpaper.

If you take an iPad and hold it upright in portrait view and draw an imaginary horizontal line halfway down the screen, the screens on the seven-inch tablets are a bit smaller than the bottom half of the iPad display. This size isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion.

Well, one could increase the resolution of the display to make up for some of the difference. It is meaningless, unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of the present size. Apple's done extensive user-testing on touch interfaces over many years, and we really understand this stuff. There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick, or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps.

Third, every tablet user is also a smartphone user. No tablet can compete with the mobility of a smartphone, its ease of fitting into your pocket or purse, its unobtrusiveness when used in a crowd. Given that all tablet users will already have a smartphone in their pockets, giving up precious display area to fit a tablet in our pockets is clearly the wrong trade-off. The 7-inch tablets are tweeners, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with an iPad.

Fourth, almost all of these new tablets use Android software, but even Google is telling the tablet manufacturers not to use their current release, Froyo, for tablets, and to wait for a special tablet release next year. What does it mean when your software supplier does not (inaudible) to use their software in your tablet? And what does it mean when you ignore them and use it anyway?

Fifth, iPad now has over 35,000 apps on the App Store. This new crop of tablets will have near zero. And sixth and last, our potential competitors are having a tough time coming close to iPad's pricing, even with their far smaller, far less expensive screens. The iPad incorporates everything we have learned about building high value products from iPhones, iPods, and Macs. We create our own A4 chip, our own software, our own battery chemistry, our own enclosure, our own everything. And this results in an incredible product at a great price. The proof of this will be in the pricing of our competitor's products, which will likely offer less for more.

These are among the reasons we think the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA, dead on arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small and increase the size next year, thereby abandoning both customers and developers who jumped on the 7-inch bandwagon with an orphan product. Sounds like lots of fun ahead.

Rumor has it, that the late Mr. Jobs is well along the way to canonization. The Pope has waived the 5 year requirement, and his first miracle was the Samsung verdict ;)

Best Buy has a pretty good selection of cases for the iPhone 5 at the two stores I've been to. I picked up a cheap clear soft plastic case for now until my iFrogz case arrives. Actually the clear case is pretty nice and lightweight.

I like the RocketFish soft shell case from Best Buy. Very light and tiny but has a good grip and adequate protection for my needs. Relatively inexpensive. And unlike some other early cases (including some of those from Monoprice), it fits perfectly, including the properly cut opening for the Lightning connector.

The clear one looked too shiny to me, so I went with the black one. This will do for now.

That is what I am using. It works fine and has a great grip. Belkin has one that is almost identical. I have the black on the sides, clear back one.

It's also being picked up by CNN...

Quoting Apple support, from the CNN article on the purple tint in brightly lit areas:
"Our engineering team just gave me this information and we recommend that you angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures," read the e-mail, as reported by Gizmodo. "The purple flare in the image provided is considered normal behavior for iPhone 5's camera."

Normal on iPhone 5, not normal on iPhone 4s?

Hopefully this can be fixed in software for current owners or some outdoor photos will be not so great.

Yes, I can see the purple flare on mine.
It seems to appear only when the light source is on the very edge of the frame.
Move it just a bit into the frame and the flare is gone.

Hmmm... I wonder if they are having issues with differential indices of refraction at the edges of the lens cover and the glass.
