Ancient Dish Receiver Going or Something Else?

Hi all,

I may need a new receiver, but am trying like crazy not to get a new one. This is for my 80 year-old mother who has been using a Dish 1000 receiver for nearly 12 years now. She is very, very difficult when it comes to teaching a new remote and menu and really want to avoid it.

Anyway, here is the problem: Last night the 1000 receiver lost transponder 2 at 119º. This is the transponder that has Bravo and HBO E which are two of her favorite channels.
Here is what I tried:
Rebooted the receiver
Removed and reinserted the access card
Ran a switch check (came out okay)
Tried to "kick start" reception on tp 2 by going to point dish screen and making the receiver look at all the transponders on several satellites.
Other receivers in the house work okay.

Still need to try moving the receiver to where one of the other receivers is to check that it isn't the cable.

Is there anything else I might be missing?
Is it normal for a receiver to drop just one transponder?

Is it time I get mom a new receiver? (I have DHH so it will be whatever they send)
Thanks in advance!

See ya
Tony

Looks like you have made the right moves so far. Agree that swaping locations could be helpful. Guess that on Point Dish screen, when you select 119/02, you aren't showing green bar?

For sure one tpn outage is not cable problem, but you'll need to check all tpn from same location for final conclusion - if all even gone, then it could be bad connection or broken F or the receiver itself, etc. Moving to other dish coax would eliminate a few guesses.

Thanks guys. I checked it out and it's definitely just the one transponder. TP2 @ 119 shows no signal. TP4 is in the 60s (very strong). I haven't switched the cables yet, between work the EKB (working on updating the DMA maps) and the holiday parties, I won't have time to look into a permanent solution until Friday or Saturday.

The LNB might be going out too. How old is it?

There's actually a chance that when you RA it with Customer Service that you may get a remanufactured 1000. Dish has nothing else to do with all the 1000s they get back from upgrades and required change outs due to incompatibility with new satellites. A quick call (ok probably not so quick) to customer service will answer that question for you.

Tony,

TP2 is on the highest frequency so your problem might be with the cable. The lower even transponder begin to have problems when the cable is going bad. Check if there's any barrel connector from the dish to the receiver. I would just replace the cable with RG6 rated to 2150 Mhz.

Thanks Randall. There is a barrel connector on that cable. It's a 30 foot run from the dish to inside the house and another 50 or so from the barrel to the receiver. I'll check it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. The LNB is about as old as the receiver! But if you know the way an SW64 works, I am using that LNB for all the receivers attached (in this case two others) and they work okay.

Fury,

Thanks for the idea. When I determine if I have a bad receiver or not I will call about a replacement. Thanks again everyone!

Yes. Unfortunately I'm intimately familiar with SW64 switches. They last forever, but are a pain in the ass to install. If all the other receivers are working, it's unlikely to be the switch or LNBF.

Thanks. I will try all that probably Saturday.

Tony,

If it does turn out to be the receiver, I have a new (still in plastic never initialized) DP301 which I think would give her the same look & feel as the old box, and I think uses the old style remote too - so no relearning curve for mom.

Swap ya for a working non-HD FTA box w/blind scan (without eye-patch ware on it though). PM if interested.

Guys ....

If the reciever is starting to die, then a 111, 311 ,301 or any of the above is not going to do well. His mother is use to the model 1000 interface. Which is not like any of the above said recievers.

She to dupicate the same user experience she would need any of the following

1000, 2700,2800,3700,3000,4000,4500,5000, JVC DVHS , or even an old 6000 model receiver.

Dish will probably try replacing it with a 111. Though they may have a 27/28/3700 on hand some where .

Sadoun usually if you call then have cheap 3700s on hand they they dont mention on there site.

I've got a 3000 in the shed. It hasn't been used in 4 or 5 years, so it might have issues with the access card.

You can have it for the cost of shipping from 39759.

I'll hook it up to be sure it's still alive before shipping (I just swapped my SuperDish, DP34, and DP LNBs back to the Dish500 and a legacy Quad so hook up is easy enough). I should be able to verify signal on both satellites, maybe even take a software update.

Okay folks... I figured out the issue and, as was theorized, the problem was nothing more than a bad coupler at the junction from the switch to the receiver. The cable does have a high frequency RF barrel connector on it, but that was not the problem. The problem was the connector at the switch was not sealed properly and the center conductor corroded. The switch seems okay an the center conductor was still nice and shiny when I pulled it out of the switch. Put on a new end and all is well.

Looks like the last cold blast we had was enough to make the signal drop off enough to lose TP2 at 119°. Since neither 110° or 61.5° use TP 2 in our area, I guess that was the first to fall.

Thanks all for all your help and replacement offers!

BTW if I do replace that receiver I will upgrade her to HD. :)
