Analog signal cutoff in 2/2009?

Honestly!?! No offense, but it really wasn't so clear. Sorry.

Well, if my response wasn't sarcasm, it would sound like it was coming from a really stupid person. It is sad that we have gotten so low in this world that you can't tell if somebody is being serious or sarcastic. (people are stupid) Just the point alone that they just came out with the 722 alone, and the idea that it will cease functioning in 2009 alone should have given me away... not to analyze the rest.

Sorry.

My thoughts exactly. I was trying to determine which type you were - sarcastic or ignorant. Both types of people exist, and are common in forums. You can't always tell by reading an isolated post. I couldn't.

wow, All I said was that it didn't come off the way you intended and you go on a rant and call me and at least more than a couple people here stupid? Well, I have a few things to call you, but I can't do it here, but swing by the pit and...
Might be time to climb off that high horse of yours before you get bucked off pal! You aren't coming off as sarcastic, just as an a-hole!

I wasn't calling you stupid. That wasn't directed at you at all. Now you are threatening me and basically telling me to take it outside (the pit). Wrong, wrong, wrong.. not directed at you.... I am talking about the human race being stupid. The idea that they would release the 722 and it could be obsolete in 2009 (2 years later) is stupid. The lack of understanding that the federal law making all OTA broadcasts digital by 2009 (pushed ahead at least twice) means analog TVs wont work with sat and cable anymore is stupid.... not directed at you at all! This 2009 federal mandate has been discussed time and time again and people are still confused.

HD or SD?

No one seems to have asked this question. When all broadcasts have to be digital does that mean that D and E will be sending HD locals to everyone with a HD receiver or will they down convert them to SD and leave people with HD receivers that don't get HD locals from them now without HD locals after the change over? I think that if HD signals are supplied to them from the locals that they should be required to pass them along to their subscribers that have HD receivers.

There is no evidence to suggest either way. The CATV companies reportedly haven't even been able to convince the FCC to let them down-convert, but that edict may or may not apply to satellite.

As time goes on, I think you'll see a whole lot more letterboxed content in SD as a gentle nudge. Maybe someone will invent squish-o-vision. It will certainly take a lot of pressure off of that lady with the thyroid problem.

The conversion to 16:9 televisions is coming along nicely and once they cut the prices by about 60%, I think you'll see a lot of people jumping on board.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

You learned a valuable lesson. ;)

Sure I learned a lesson. Don't overestimate some of the members of satelliteguys.us. I think my original post was pretty clear cut idiotic to the point where most would realize I was full of it, chuckle and move on. Instead, many thought I was just an idiot thinking what I was saying was real, as if I thought that and legitimately was trying to answer the guys question seriously.

No more sarcasm I guess, without spelling it out, as in *being sarcastic* I guess I can't do that here without the disclaimer.

TV stations will most likely continue to broadcast (2) signals, one in SD and one in HD (at times).

Hey, the 16x9 HD feeds passed along to analog TVs (like TV2 on my patio) from my 622 look good with the black bars on top and bottom. They can just downconvert the HD feeds of the networks to SD, maintaining the aspect ratio with black bars over and under on older analog sets. People will just have to get used to it. It looks as good as SD TVs will get.

I watch Monsters HD all the time on my patio on an SD TV. Items I burn to a DVD-R recorder too are obviously SD and not HD, and look fine.

Some of the network shows that are already in HD like My Name Is Earl are in letterbox on their SD broadcast, maintaining the aspect ratio from HD. I think people are getting used to it.

Just because the signal is digital does not mean it is HD.

That is what Russell is pointing out. What will they do? Will they take widescreen content from the HD channel and letterbox it, or will they pull the Fox stunt and crop the sides off?

The stations will only broadcast ONE signal, digital. The digital set top box, whatever it is, will convert it to analog. Digital does not mean HD. Digital is SD, ED and HD. For example, our local NBC station local news is in SD however the primetime content is HD (Heroes, Life, ect). This is how Dish and Direct will most likely broadcast this content the way it is sent to them. The analog signal WILL stop, therefor they will have to change the way they recieve and rebroadcast the signals.

I hate that Fox does this! UGH- Why can't they just letterbox it? I assumed it was just my local affiliate that had that bright idea...

Every time I look a my television screen when watching Fox (with football and baseball tonight that means pretty much all day today) I want to run over and find that button (like on a computer monitor) to shrink the display size! So annoying...

Just speculating but most of the current digital stations have -1, -2, and -3 variants. Here we have channel 2, 2-1, 2-2, etc. They will probably put the SD on one station and the HD on another

720p is HD. Always has been. It's 720 60p, as opposed to 1080 30i. Fewer lines of resolution, but twice the refresh rate, so to speak.

ED was widescreen used by Fox for a while, 480 though. Since it's not "official" others may use other definitions in different contexts, such as early plasmas.

ATSC DTV Formats (18)

Vert-lines....Pixels........Aspect Ratio........Picture Rate
...1080........1920..............16:9..........60I...30P...24P
....720........1280..............16:9..........60P...30P...24P

Previously we had channels 2-83
In 2004 we had channels 2-69
After conversion, we will have channels 2-51

622 Issues finally getting to me!

How are receivers shipped?
