When they cut off the broadcast signal of analog tv, will it have any effect on Dish Network. Will my analog tv still work with my 722?

Not sure how it will affect Dish, but you will be glad that you have your 722. It will be the one of the only ways to recieve OTA broadcasts, with analog TVs.

As long as your DISH (DirecTV, cable, FiOS) receiver outputs to analog sets, there's no problem. The change will only affect those who receive broadcast signals using traditional antennas.

Dish will still be able to supply locals, the shut off will not effect them as they will just be delivered to Dish differently is all.
Actually, Dish's contracts may only apply to the current analog channel in many markets so what happens when those shut off ? Do they automatically switch to the digital channels ? Do we lose that local channel (if no new contract is agreed upon) ?

There will be an impact on Dish Network, as well as DirecTV, which has been discussed in another thread. E* and D* both get many of their local channel feeds by receiving OTA analog broadcasts and then sending them to the uplink center by satellite or fiber-optic backhaul feed. It is believed that many of these analog backhaul feeds will not be converted to digital in time for the 2009 analog shutoff. What this means is that some local SD channels may disappear for a short time if E* or D* have not completed the conversion of their receiving equipment from analog to digital in time. As long as you have an OTA antenna on your model 622 or 722 receiver and can receive your local digital channels you will not be affected at all.

Believed by whom? It doesn't take very long to replace an analog tuner with a digital tuner.

Because D* and E* share a lot of the backhauls, they'll be collectively motivated to see that the necessary changes are made.

He is referring to a Dish and Directv claim from a month or two ago and rest assured, changes at the local channel's uplink facilities involves FAR MORE than just swapping a tuner out !

Also, D* and E* expect the local channels to pay for this changeover, not the two DBS providers. That's just asking for a pissing match between them and who will lose ? Us... (I do have a 622 and get my digital locals via antenna so I'm not concerned)

Doesn't matter. The analog backfeeds do not fall under the requirement of broadcast OTA.

Your TV will work fine with the 722.

You would lose your tv guide for locals, if you lose the locals. The 722 is useless without the tv guide. Dish had better see that they get the locals converted to digital, (not necessarily HD) before the conversion date.

Just remember that you may have to rescan the OTA locals since channels on which the signals would appear OTA may change in your area. However, the ViP 722 DOES NOT receive analog signals.

Didn't you get the memo? Dish 722 boxes will cease to work when OTA analog broadcasting ends in 2009. The fact that the law applying only to OTA broadcasting has nothing to do with cable or satellite isn't stopping Dish. They are just going to shut off the new 722 released this year.

Memo to skottey:

  • The 722 does not pick up OTA analog
  • The 722 does pick up OTA digital
  • OTA digital broadcasts will continue after Feb 2009, analog will not
Any customers with a 622 or 722 and an antenna that picks up their local digital channels will be just fine.

wow.... you really have no sense of sarcasm do you? Please re-read my reply... I was, um, being sarcastic. :D

No. To beat this to death, the ViP722 receives the local digital OTA signals now. You also get them from Dish if you pay for locals. The guide data for locals is provided only to those who pay for locals from Dish, not just OTA.

And the ViP722 (& ViP622) are NOT useless without the guide. You can manually program recordings, just like a VCR. I do it all the time. Read The Fine Manual to find out how.

It isn't going to be much more than tuners and antennas. Dish and Direct and Cable will just pass the digitals, aspect ratio and all. Since the thing seems to be to stretch sd to make it look like hd, broadcasters will probably do the same with their upconverters, although I am certainally against that today. We have black shoulders on out upconvert, so there is no automatic 4:3/16:9 switching, we are always 16:9, just with black shoulders during the sd times. Network will be all HD at that time, locals most likely will not as soon.

DirecTV used to pick up our digital before we started passing HD, so I know it is easy. We bought the equipment for them. Our analog had ghosting problems which have been fixed, was why they used digital.

622 Issues finally getting to me!

How are receivers shipped?
