assuming everything worked out ok today, what was the total channels being lit up today?

No doubt, regardless of what directv ends up delivering, subs need to take a long hard look at whether or not they want to give their money to a company with this track record.

Did ANYONE hear a firm date from DirecTV other then the CSR's?

If you look at the Zap2It guide that an article mentioned added the new D* HD channels, the only new ones are: A&E HD, History Channel HD, National Geographic HD, MHD, Cinemax HD, Cinemax West HD, Starz, Starz Kids and Family, Showtime West HD, The Movie Channel HD, Outdoor HD. Definitely nothing to go this crazy over. And when everyone does see the channels, they'll probably be even more pissed. Most subscribers are only going to get 5 of those.

Where's TBS HD, CNN HD, Cartoon Network HD, Food Network HD, HGTV HD, NFL HD, The Weather Channel HD, ESPNEWS HD, Smithsonian HD? They were all supposed to come today too.

Just got a call from D* we were all wrong they we are going to get 150 SD channels by the end of 2007. Why are we all so upset we already have these channels D* is right on the ball.

is d* getting their content for these new channels in mpeg4 from the studios or just encoding an mpeg2 studio feed to mpeg4?

My understanding of the industry is that a post production company, such as technicolor, will convert movies to all required formats DVD, TV, etc... So as such they will do all the processing to MPEG2 or MPEG4 formats. They have even claimed to be able to shoot a movie with a digital movie camera and have all the delivery types ready to go with a push of the button.

As for real time events (like sports and the news), I'm not sure if everything is just put out as an MPEG 2 stream since we'll need to keep that format around for some time as that's what the local HD broadcasts use.
