I posted this on the other forum but though it was humors - on the phone with a CSR to cancle a receiver the CSR told me the HD channels were turned on yesterday and I should look for them :)

Great guy - I told him that the CSRs must be the last to know and that no the switch was not turned on. He had to put me on hold to resolve some things on my account but came back and said yes there were technical issues and the switch would be thrown soon.

D* clearly has some organizational issues but I have found all the CSRs to be very helpful and really try at doing a good job. I have to say I have always treated them with respect though - and perhaps negotiating skills or lack there of is why others have had issues.

I'm no software expert, but I did some testing for a system upgrade for my employer over the past month. Everything went fine in development, and clone testing, but as soon as we tried to go live with it and put it into prodiction everything crashed. That was two weeks ago, and IS still isn't 100% sure when they will get the issues resolved.

I am a software designer / developer so I guess I would be an expert.

If a large system works in testing and crashes when it goes live, the cause would most likely be one of the following:

1. Race condition (multiple threads / processes trying to access the same thing at the same time or process a depends on process b which depends on process c which depends on process a)

2. Networking problem (system a can't talk to system b, usually a domain or security / firewall issue)

3. Bad design which can't handle the required volume

4. Live hardware doesn't match the test hardware

5. Garbage data in the live system which didn't cause a problem in the previous software but is needed by the new version (should have been caught in testing -- always a good idea to test with a backup copy of the real data)

Number 1 could be the hardest to find. Number 3 would take the longest to fix.

Wow I said that days ago. One channel, just one silly freakin channel would end all of this. Hell I dont care if its upconverted Directv basics. LOL

I saw channel 498 briefly last night coming from the new sat......I hope directv's latest version of hd lite looks better.

Even better than their current MPEG-4 locals and RSNs? If so, then in the words of Darth Vader: "Impressive," breathing sound, "most impressive."

Most of the mpeg 4s and rsns are pretty good, but still do not match up with ota and fios.

I had to call on Sunday night to get my DVR service turned back on for my TiVO unit after a package upgrade and the CSR I spoke said that the HD channels had already been launched. After about 5 min of me checking channels and seeing no HD he put me on hold. When he came back he told me they may not yet be available in mya are and to check back on the 19th.

Unless you have ever been involved (on the inside) of a Customer Service Center, I understand the experience/perception people have about the knowledge/accuracy of CSR statements.

However, it's a monumental undertaking to ensure accuracy when you have a large number of agents possessing different skills and work motivations. Even the simplest things can become complex as it applies to cohesiveness and accuracy across the group. Especially when things are moving fast (to them - slow to us).

About 90 minutes ago, I turned on ch 499 and the title was "B Band Converter Failure Channel". Told me if I had a slide, the Converter was not attached properly, fortunately, I had searching for satellite and it told me to go to 498 for more news. Nothing on ch 498, so I went back to 499, and bam, it's back to B Band Converter Test Channel.

Anybody else see this today?

I did not hear that. Earl said it was coming from D10. While earls track record has not been the best lately (and only because I believe he is towing the party line) I believe what Earl posted last night was accurate.

The thread that was deleted (which shouldn't have been activated in the first place) had confirmation of it. Just incorrect channel mapping, I guess...and itchy trigger fingers for the thread. :)

Yes Sypinx, I know that and understand that. Thats why I am not giving Earl any greef about it. I am sticking up for Earl here.
