The Fire is a Nook clone with a faster CPU.
I think Nook will be at least $200 before the week ends.

If you have to open it up to get there, it's a no-starter, I think.
Amazon definitely targets the Apple "total experience" crowd, not the generic Android user...

It doesn't have an SD card slot because they want you to download everything from the cloud. Done with a book, delete it. Need is back again for some reason, download it again.
8GB is plenty of space.
I've pre-ordered one. I want the 7" size. I use Amazon a ton. And the $199 price is just too good to pass up. If Flash performs well, then maybe I could get one for my wife too.
yes the size is fine, i just like the ability to have the sd card

In a device that's meant to consume media such as this, including 3g is, IMO too slow. Also sending an occasional book (a few MB tops) is different than the targeted usage for media consumption. Nevermind that you have to setup with carriers , plus the costs associated with the cellular radio probably destroy what little profit margin there is.
They (Amazon) are hoping to profit on content delivery and break even on the tablet.
So you never use the iPad @ home where wifi + even minimal broadband is going to be faster than 3g?

There is one theoretical possibility: the Fire has a microUSB charging connector.
If the USB communication circuitry is in place and can be enabled, the game might not be over yet...

While the tablet looks interesting, its still a 7" form factor, and is thus not very appealing to me FOR WHAT I use a tablet for. The bigger news today is NOT the tablet, but the $79 and $99 Kindle e-readers. As was posted on the last page, they are going to sell a LOT of Kindles -- and in pushing the price below $100, will force their competitors hands. Moreover, its going to have a profound impact on the book industry; on the publishing industry, in that it is going to profoundly change the way people read books.
While publishers are going to fight tooth and nail to maintain their grossly over-priced agency model, the reality is that this has the potential to
completely reshape how people buy and consume books.

i ordered the "fire"- wife will want to kill me but I figured I would order it and can cancel before it ships in november if need be. Still waiting for my 99.00 HP Touchpad
I find the most interesting feature of the Fire tablet to be its Silk "split-browser".
The name comes probably from "silky", i.e. an attempt to find a synonym to the adjective "buttery" when used with "smooth".
And most likely must convey the experience using the browser with Amazon's cloud doing the heavy lifting in the background.
If this works, it will be a big "thumbs-up" for the cloud in general and for this usage in particular.
And most likely it will be widely copied...

Their new browser is supposedly faster because it will send its page request to Amazon, Amazon will compost the page and cache as much as possible and send it down to the tablet without the tablet having to follow all the links on the page by itself.
