In fairness to the Red Sox, I think it was specifically written into Damon's contract that there were only eight teams that he could be traded to, and therefore, there were twenty-one teams that were not on that list.
That's not as condemning as the revelation a decade ago that a lot of black ballplayers had it in their contract that they could not be traded to Boston and maybe just one or two additional cities but could be sent anywhere else.
I think that Detroit might have hoped it could do what Baltimore has done recently, which is to save a few bucks at the end of a losing season and pick up a low level prospect or two and then buy Damon back for next year.
