Kevin Youkilis to have season ending surgery on his thumb.
NEVER in all my years following sports have I seen a team get hit by the injury bug like this Red Sox team!
Every year, some team gets decimated like this, whether it's baseball or football.
If anyone cares, the diagnosis is better than feared. It's a major sprain of the hyper-extended knee. Santana and Hafner were placed on the 15 day DL yesterday.
Nevermind. I spoke too soon. Santana will be undergoing season ending surgery. Recovery time is at least 6 months.
But nothing was broke ?
Thats definately a good sign. :
True, but the surgery is to repair his lateral collateral ligament. Sometimes knee ligaments, especially in catchers can be worse than a broken bone. Let's hope he makes a full recovery.
It's a shame though. I really thought Santana would be in the running for ROtY.
The Red Sox have called up newly acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to replace the injured Kevin Cash. Apparently Jason Varitek (broken foot) is still a couple of weeks away. Now Victor Martinez can share the first base duties with Mike Lowell (his hip won't allow him to play there every day).
Also, Dustin Pedroia will start a rehab stint in AAA, and could be activated as soon as next Tuesday.
Tigers beat the Jays today so the Red Sox have an oppertunity to pick up a game on them and the yankees play the 1st place Rangers.
Yet another BS for Papelbon. Bard replacing him in the 9th after allowing 3 runs to tie.
I thought the Sox were grooming Hansen to replace Papelbon as closer, who would then become a starter. I still don't see Papelbon as a closer, in spite of his modest success to date in that role....
And Papelbon's save statistics are deceiving as well. Has he had his first one-two-three inning yet this year? He is a blown save waiting to happen. A closer without an "out pitch".....
"A blown save waiting to happen."...
Pqapelbon is still a blown save waiting to happen. He is a closer without an "out pitch"
... Okajima gave up four hits and a walk to the five batters he faced, allowing two runs and leaving the bases loaded, no out.
Papelbon came in and was only able to wriggle out of it because Jacoby Ellsbury made a highlight film diving catch and somehow the dumb baserunner on third didn't even score on that flyball out.
A couple of weeks ago, there was a graphic on Papelbon on ESPN saying something like he had pitched with the bases loaded eight times this year and struck out the side in seven of them and was unscored upon in those innings, but I bet he has let more inherited runners score than the average closer has this year. He gets some saves by coming in with a three run lead and two men on and letting the two inherited runners score. He will be come a starter very soon. In fact, if Billy Wagner had agreed to allow his option to be picked up, Papelbon would have been a certainty to be converted into a starter next spring, and if they can buy a proven closer in the off-season, or if Bard comes into his own this month and in the playoffs, that will still happen.
If Papelbon had blown the save tonight, I would have taken up a collection to buy the team just so I could cut Papelbon....
The guy's earned run average in save situations is over 5. Almost no one swings and misses when he pitches. He lets in too many inherited runners. He is a blown save waiting to happen
...Then, gas man Papelbon lets in two inherited runners and one of his own to blow a three run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Searching ths forum for, "Papelbon is a blown save waiting to happen" will locate multiple posts. He will not be the closer next year.
Papelbon sucks. Blown save number 5, ERA over 3. Look for him to be playing elsewhere next year. I doubt that the Red Sox will even try to make him into a starter, because he has been a reliever for too long, and his salary demand will be too high to give the transition to starter a shot.
From the SatelliteGuys archives:
Blown save number 6. Must lead the league.
Edit/update: The Boston Herald reported on August 10th that he had 28 saves in 32 opportunities, so todays blown save might have been only his 5th. Still, since he's getting $9+ million this year and is arbitration eligible once more, they need to cut him, or he'll become a $12+ million a year, pedestrian relief pitcher for them next year.
