Nomar has the same listed height and weight as Jimmy Foxx. I also remember him being displayed shirtless on the cover of a national sports magazine (Sports Illustrated, maybe?) a few years ago as an example of one of those athletes who was untra-dedicated to improving himself through weigth training. Has his name appeared on any of the PED lists yet?

Plotlines galore at the A's-Red Sox game tonight:
* Nomar makes his first ever appearance in an opposing uniform (he got a HUGEEEEEE ovation, BTW).
* Orlando Cabrera (ie. the player Nomar was traded for) was also in the lineup tonight for the A's (Cabrera himself got a huge ovation when he returned to Fenway in 2005 as a member of the Angels). O-Cab, of course, was a member of the '04 World Series team.
* John Smoltz made his first start at Fenway as a member of the Red Sox
* Matt Holliday made his first appearance at Fenway since game 2 of the 2007 World Series. But more importantly, many people think he will succeed Bay in LF in 2010 (I personally hope that doesn't happen).
All this and oh yeah there's a game going on............A's 4, Red Sox 0 bottom of 5th.
IMO, the Red Sox really need to add another bat!

I am sure you remember his great years in Boston very, very well. (Interestingly, in the prime of his career, the Red Sox were not the offensive juggernaut they have been recently. In those years, they didn't have players with high homer and RBI totals. To me, those Red Sox teams- 1999-2000- were a two-man team- Nomar and Pedro.
Did he get past first base?
Two words: Adam. Dunn. He's playing well, but his team is not.
We members on this site have had mixed success when going to live games- HD had great success at Cavs games, but was 0-2 at Browns game last year; Salsa at Raiders games; KCK at Ducks home playoff games, etc.

Great story about Tito and the compassion he has for his players.
IMO, Tito, Joe Torre and Mike Scioscia are the three classiest managers in baseball.

The Blue Jays have released B.J. Ryan, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. The 33-year-old lefty signed a five year $47MM deal with the Jays before the 2006 season that was, at the time, the largest deal ever for a reliever. The contract expires after 2010, but the Jays still owe Ryan about $15MM.
Ryan dominated in 2006, striking out more than four times as many as he walked and allowing 30 fewer hits than innings pitched. However, he's been a major disappointment since missing 2007 with Tommy John surgery. He was effective last year, but has struggled in 2009, walking 7.4 batters per nine with a career-low strikeout rate and more hits allowed than innings pitched.

If I'm Joe Maddon, I choose Halladay.
I don't think Wakefield even gets into the game unless it goes into extra innings (he would be the perfect guy to come in and pitch 2 or 3 innings if needed).

I agree with Sabres. Throwing out who will be rested and who won't for a second, I think the players who have earned the start are Halladay, Greinke, and Wakefield. And Wakefield starting would be a wonderful story, to not only pitch in your first all-star game at age 42, but also to start in it.
