AL EAST 2009

Red Sox defeat the Nats 11-3, and the Yankees lose to the Braves 4-0.

The Sox now have a 5 game lead in the AL East. It's the first time since 2007 that the Sox have had at least a five game lead.

What was the percentage of Red Sox fans to Nats fans?

70-30?

I was down last night with a about 10 sox fans from my area. I would say it was may 29k to 12k, and I am really giving the Nats the benefit of the doubt by say 12k it might of been less. It was hard to tell I was sitting pretty far out in left field.

I am going down Thursday, also. I have better seats so I will give a review of Nationals Field. Hopefully with some pics.

Youk gets the night off tonight, at least the start, Papi slides up to cleanup....

1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. J.D. Drew, RF
3. Jason Bay, LF
4. David Ortiz, 1B
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
8. Nick Green, SS
9. John Smoltz, RHP

Why are the Red Sox going to give starts to this 4 million year old man?

Typical over reaction by you. He pitched poorly in the first inning of his first start in a year, he was fine after that. I realize that you know more than Theo and if you were GM we would of won 5 straight world series trophies, but give the organization a break here and lets see a few more starts before jumping on this signing.

Are you and Vurbano ever satisfied with anything? Hell Sox have the bet record in the American League, and are probably the best team in baseball.

Nobody likes a cynic.

The people who agreed to pay him $5 plus incentives now have a stake in his participation. He was purchased because there was reasonable concern that not all of the young pitchers would pitch as well as they have. But they have. Now, no one wants to say they can do as well or better by letting Smoltz go and just eating the money, which will swell to well over $8 million of he makes it through the season

I agree,
Give him 4-5 starts and see where he stands.

Tim Wakefield picked up his 10th win of the season, as the Sox defeated the Braves 1-0.

At 42 years young, Wake is making a serious bid for his first All-Star berth! :up

Over/under: 5 AL East Pitchers in the All-Star Game?

Off the top of my head, I count seven pitchers worthy of consideration: Halladay, Sabathia, Rivera, Beckett, Wakefield, Papelbon and Sherrill.

However, with the every team must have a representative rule (a rule that I personally like), I doubt very much all seven get in.

How many Starting pitchers do they normally take, quite a few if I remember correctly ...
Verlander definitely should be there and possibly E. Jackson too. ( I know Sab's was looking for AL East only, but...)

Jimbo

IMO, Verlander is a LOCK (in fact, he should be under serious consideration to start), and I think Edwin Jackson deserves to go also (he's been a stud for my fantasy team :D).

A guy like Sherrill could steal a spot from someone (if he's chosen as the Orioles sole All-Star), but then again Adam Jones should make it.

Lowell to get shot Monday

By: Rob Bradford

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell said after his team's 1-0 win over the Braves that he will be receiving a Synvisc shot in his surgically-repaired right hip Monday, flying to Boston after Sunday afternoon's game in Atlanta. Lowell, who flied out to right field while pinch-hitting for Sox' starter Tim Wakefield in the seventh inning, hasn't been able to shake the discomfort he initially encountered June 18.

I'm wondering if this problem with Lowell persists, will the Sox reexamine the Manny Delcarmen for Nick Johnson proposal from the Nationals?

Mike Lowell is back in Boston getting his (hip) joint lubricated.
