I have a dual receiver/DVR in my living room, one tuner/DVR for the living room, one tuner/DVR for kid's room. In my bedroom, I have a regular non-DVR receiver. My question is, can I purchase a single receiver/DVR off ebay or whereever, and replace the non-DVR receiver in the bedroom and it be plug and play or does it the receiver/DVR have to be activated through DISH network?

All receivers have to be activated with E*.

It would still need to be activated. But I don't think a commitment is required since you own the receiver. BUT look out for a possible Activation Fee or Quite possible you would have to get the new Purple Smart card. That may cost.

625 is the only one SD DVR thats currently being offered. But their may be some older models out there that are good. Someone will chime in.

Not so. The 625 is currently not in production and Dish is sending out 522's if you are leasing. If you purchase the receiver, you can still find 501's, 508's and 510's available as far as single tuner receivers are concerned. Also note that the 501 and 508 do not incur dvr charges but the 510 does.

What model number is a good single receiver/DVR unit? I just have standard service and not HD service.

You won't save on your monthly bill by owning and not leasing. You might be able to sweet talk them into leasing you another DVR. You don't say if you own or lease your others.

The 501 & 508 are grandfathered so they have no DVR fee. They are not as sophisticated as the 522 or 625, though. No point in getting a 510, you'd still pay the DVR fee and have a less capable box.

Avoid the 721- worked well, but is being phased out.

I'd go with the 625 and pay the DVR fee for the added features, or a 508 "at the right price."

I personally currently have two ViP722 HD DVRs and one 508. I've previously owned 301 and 721 boxes.

I found a 508 receiver and seller states it comes with a smart card and no account balance. Will dish network charge anything to use this receiver? Will it still will have to be activated through dish? I'm just trying get something basic that won't kill me in price. Thanks for any info.

Has to be activated with E*. No DVR fee but you will incur an additional receiver charge of $5 unless it's the only receiver.

What LNBs do I need?
