activating external hard drive

Would I be able to use an external hard drive as additional video storage if I have the VIP-722 DVR?

Yes, it is plug and play and auto enabled on all HD DVR's!

Thanks for the quick response. I connected the device, followed the onscreen instructions, the receiver rebooted itself, but I see no evidence(increased recording time, etc.) of the external drive in the menu options. How do I know if the installation was successful?

Did the EHD display a message that it was formatting the drive? Try a different USB port. Please PM me your account or phone number and I will look into this.

It does not give you increased recording time, it offers a place where you can archive recordings off the internal hard drive. You must manually move recordings to the EHD, that will give you more free internal hard drive space.

Recordings archived to the EHD are playable just as if they were still on the internal drive, they all are listed under "My Media" at the top of the recordings list.

Menu 4 2 to send recordings to the ehd on a 722. Once there you can view them from DVR, My Media
