How do I activate an existing receiver on my account? Can I do this online? I tried to do it over the phone but the guy said my access card is too old and I need a new one. I just got the receiver in october of 2004 so why do I need a new access card?

Access cards maintain their security. If your card is out of date (or really just if they think something might be fishy), just get the new card FedEX'd to you overnight for the $20 and if you make sure to activate it with in the 14 day period, you get your $20 back (credited to your 1st bill). No sweat, no conspiracy!

should i get all 4 cards replaced? what is the number to try to activate the receiver or get new cards instead of calling 1-800-directv and waiting on hold for an hour.

For each IRD that they say you need a new card, then yes. If memory serves me correctly they bill the $20, like on a CC listed with YOUR name and address, its not like it is out of pocket up front (if that is the issue). BUT like I said before, if you don't activate them in the allotted time they WILL charge you.

I don't have a credit card with any money left on it so that is a no go. Is there a number I can call and try to activate the receiver using the card in my directivo I no longer use?

Does it have a 3 or a 4 on the front of the card, or does it look like a credit card? The P3 and P4 cards have a vertical design to them, whereas the P5 cards have a horizontal design.

If it is a P3 card, you need a new one. If it is a P4 or 5, it's a current card and can be activated.

It has directv access card and the directv logo with grey on top and bottom on the front. on the back it says copyright 2004 and it does have a small 3 on the bottom.

Had a customer yesterday need to have a P4 replaced (told her it was too old)

Just bought a receiver off Ebay with an access card. How can I avoid needing to replace it, since I am in Canada and doubt DirecTV will send one to me there?

I think they stopped authorizing the P4 and now are exclusive with the P5.

I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong about this, but isn't that illegal? If so, we don't discuss those things here. Maybe you should get a US address to become legal.

I have a US address; Im just not living there. It is not illegal to pay for a DirecTV subscription and watch TV outside of the US.

Then just have the card sent to your "billing" address and go pick it up or maybe risk having the person there, FedEX it to you in Canada.
