921 dvr problem

I had been using a 921 HD DVR receiver until last march, when I deactivated it, as I bought a new 622 receiver. The other day I thought I would hook it up to the satellite. When I did this I could recive NSA and a few other ones, My desire was to use the 921 to record OTA programs. I could not make this work so I called Dish and had the receiver reactivated. After that I was able to receive OTAs. However the receiver will freeze up when I try to play back any thing recorded, the receiver also responds very slowly when I try to change channels etc. I did a check harddrive test and found during the test that when it gets to the number 118 it stops and I have to abort the test.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way of trying to re-initialize the drive and what codes I would need to do so, or is the harddrive shot ?
