I cancelled my appointment for a Dish install after reading so much negative Dish stuff. I am going to try a Directivo. I am currently with Direct. I get upgraded to that & locals on the 23rd. I know it's early but can anyone give me an honest comparison on the 522 & Tivo now that the 522 has NBR & maybe a season/Dish pass feature? Any bad things come of this upgrade on the 522?
I'm kind of kicking myself for not at least trying Dish.

The Name Based recording is a major improvement on the 522 however it still needs refinement remember it a new offering for Dish Network Tivo has had years to refine there product. I also have a series 1 stand alone Tivo and I have played with a series 1 Direct Tivo in the past, I would have to say that the new 522 software is pretty close to the original series 1 Tivo functionallity. I would like to see a few more of the Tivos features added but its heads and shoulders above the old Time slot based recording we previously had. Its still pretty early to say the product is finish I am hopefull that Dish Network will listen to us users and implement some of the changes we have on the wish list if so then I think the 522 could be as good as the DirectTivo in the future. I think the hardware on both units is compareable it just a matter of the software.

I also have NBR on the 522 and have a Series 1 Direct tivo. The user interface is kind of rough and they have a ways to go, but the functionality appears to be very close to my Tivo.

Because of the savings I have with Dish over DirectTV, I am inclined to continue with the 522. My wife complains of the complexity of using it, but it is better.

My Series 1 Tivo had 3 different versions in the 2 years it was being worked on. It hasn't had an update in nearly three years (I think). It still works like a champ.

On the other hand, my 522 DVR, which I got last May, started at version 1.69. I am now at version 2.31. You can see that Dish's attitude toward new versions is a little more liberal.

I particularly like being able to use it on two TVs. The picture quality is better. They are moving in the right direction.

More bugs means more software releases. :(
