Certinally the recorded programs are on the hard drive...

But are the programs to be recorded on the drive or somewhere else?

I had someone with 2 homes thinking of putting their drives in a removable bay and taking the recorded shows to another 522 at their other home.

would their primary receiver keep recording normally or would they need to set up both boxes with timers?

they tell me their second home has zip line of site for either provider:( home on wrong side of mountain out west.

I already told them this would void their warranty, but they dont appear to care since the home doesnt have cable access either

Each hard drive is "married" to the unit it is in. On 522's if you move it to another unit, it might reinitialize the drive and you lose all your programs.

Thanks Smith :)

The timers are stored on the hard drive so if you swap drives on the "active" unit you need to setup the timers again. Most of the other settings are kept in the unit's memory.

I've done basically the same thing, just without the vacation home... a subbed unit downstairs that records stuff and an unsubbed one upstairs that I use for archiving, swap the drives periodically and just have to remember to be sure the subbed one's timers are ok.

Will there be more HD locals this year?
