Hello all:

Just a tidbit to share.

Recently upgraded from a 4DTV 920 to a 922. For some strange reason, the time when the 922 is off, the time clock is right on, but the IPG runs 45 minutes behind realtime....Just got off with tech support and they say that is normal for the 922!

That is the 1st time I heard about that one! ANYONE else?

lol - Mine is the same way. It's annoying but didn't seem to be going away so I figured it was supposed to be that way. Why you'd want to see what you missed, I don't know.

Pic attached so the 922less can see what we're talking about:

Maybe because of where the 922's are now made (no Reference on purpose...no slurs).

The 920 was made in the US and the guide was right on time!

Can you imagine being a tech rep and having to say "That is normal for a 922"! I would be laughing too hard to be one of their tech guys!

Seriously, I would bet the circuitry design was done here, and the overseas maker just followed the spec.....especially since they are apparently still coming out that way! And the List price is...$800! If I had to pay that...I would be a lot more unhappy!

Just a minor inconvenience but DUMB!!!!:D

The 922 is a stand-alone unit. A quick google search tell me that the 922's came out in '01.

The 920/922 are stand aone units. The 905 is the 4DTV Digital sidecar.

922 Ken!

Two questions. Is the 922 the main unit or is it a sidecar(?) for FTA ku. Also when did it first come out?
Thanks

Hi Ken:

No, it is a BRAND NEW 922,,,not a sidecar (never tried one of those 905 rascals, since I went right from an Analog setup to the 920, when it first came out)...

I cannot remember when the 922's were first made (when they replaced the 920) I am sure someone else will remember though! I want to think, maybe very late 1990's? (I think the 920 came out in 1997...still have my receipt and that is what it shows...I was a very early adopter of the 4DTV).

Went from Chaparell>Toshiba analog>then the 920

I forget the name of the companys and the reason, but here you go.

The 920 was made before the law or rights was passed, and so it was not affected, the 922 was made when it was not allowed for some reason to be right on if i recall, due to some sort of copyright issue, the guide was not allowed to highlight the current program and time. that is why the guide comes up on the previous time slot, and often times 1 channel up/down from the currently viewed program, though now that stupid law or whatever it was is done for, so basically Motorola has the right to fix it on the 922 with a simple upgrade via satellite, though they will not do it, unless somebody else pays for it to be done.

Thanks tdti!!!!!

WOW....That's why I love this site...always something to learn!
I had no idea why since I was very happy with my 920, and never considered the 922 upgrade until my calander said...battery time!

As it turned out, I could have kept the retired 920 in service since the batter-ectemy was successful, and the patient lived!! (still happy with the switch to the 922 and my SPARE)

The 922 gets more channels anyway so it is a better unit.

Sounds like some type of IP infringement...I owned a patent (since sold) and when a VERY large company infringed on it...I filed suit (it settled and then I sold it to another company) Patent Infringement suits can bring treble damages!!!)

Thanks for all the info guys. One last question. How does the 922 get more channels? I only do ku FTA right now but want to try 4dtv sometime.

Thanks

Not sure on that one but

perhaps it is because the Tuner is a bit more sensitive on the 922....my count from the system options showed 4579 on the 922 vs 4565 or something close on the 920. I have noticed a slightly better signal on the 922, but with the rest of my gear, the 920 was not too shabby itself!

Of course, not all are viewable due to subscriptions, radio, etc...who could use that many anyway! (Now I am just getting ready to order a dedicated dis for FTA....Ebay strikes again (know this vendor) a complete setup (no cables) inc Winegard 31" dish, Invacom C+L .3 LNB, and the sg2100 motor drive for about $185 delivered! Not bad. (another 3000+ channels up their...same caveats!)

The 922 receives both SCPC & MCPC DCII broadcasts, the 920 only does MCPC, also the 922 has a analog tuner that can handle 36mhz feeds, the 920 can't.

Single channel per carrier, and multiple channel per carrier.

Some channels that come to mind that the 920 can't get, is some of the showtime channels on AMC-11, also I think B mania and wealth TV.

Funny since I got my new 922....I have been flipping around again and have had a look at B-mania and do receive Wealth in both HD and normal...B-mania is really funny!

When I had the 920, I got fat dumb and lazy....just stayed parked on G1 for my Digital Starz sub (wouldn't even bother with analog since normal SD analog really shows all the flaws on the Plasma HD set.

Then I started with FTA...then the 922....Now I am back in full swing, replacing, and adding stuff regularly.....getting very expensive but saved me from going little dish which has poor PQ and is REALLY expensive over the long run...besides I would never subscribe to the food channel <grin>, and would have needed a crane or jackhammer to remove the concrete block that my BUD pole is anchored into!!!! I put that pole in about 12 yrs ago (I moved the same dish from another house and had to tourch the post at ground lever to cut it off) .

I llive in an area that becomes VERY windy in the winter (I lose about 75 ft of redwood fence yearly Now when I replace the fence, I use metal galvanized posts that will not rot in my lifetime) thank you insurance!). The concrete foundation for the BUD is 3 ft deep x 2 ft wide...not going anywhere fast!

It was the old Gemstar patents. Gemstar lost the patent suit, but nobody cares enough to update the 922 IPG.

But, it'spretty much why Dish ended up buying the owner of Gemstar. Unfortunetly, they also got YSP in the deal.
