40" C/Ku - Band Dish

I didn't have any luck on DVB reception with my DirecPC dish and the C-band lnb, but then my signal meter is dead :( I'll try again after getting a new one... unless a miracle happens and I get my 120cm before then.. *grumble, grumble*

I noticed Cascade and and Pete have their lnb's aligned totally different :D If you're aiming at your true south (no skew) I believe Pete's pictures are correct.

Just switched over to analog, getting a scratchy 'University Network', 'CNBC US', and a VERY faint 'Fox News' and 'We'. I can work with that : ) Getting too late to do any tweaking but it sure is nice to see the Doc's face and hear his "patter" on analog C-Band, with a 40" P* dish!

Excellent Pete! Cascade, were you able to receive these channels clearer using your 120cm dish?

Patriot 48" dish

Anyone have any experience with the Patriot 48" offset dish?

Looks like it may be a good compromise between a 1.2m and 1.8m. I have seen them priced around $200 on Eye in the Sky website.

No experience with the Patriot dish, but I'm not sure it would be a compromise between a 1.2m and 1.8m dish. If everything is measured the same way, wouldn't a 1.2m dish be more or less the same size as a 48" one?

My planned purchase is the Baja Beach 120cm from Eye in the Sky; 1.2m for about $265 shipped. Saving up slowly... oh so slowly :no

Ooops

Okay.. my goof.

May end up with a 1.2m so I can use it with my current mount. I thought about one of those 40" Primestar dishes but think I will go for the 1.2m instead. Besides, the wife and the HOA would not be happy if I tried to go any larger.

Thanks.

Will let you know as I have one on order from them - hopefully it'll be here first part of next week!

Well I basically spent the whole day scanning the sky with my 40" P* C-Band dish and have disapointing news. I first swung around to PAS9 and lined up with KU and then slapped-on the C-Band LNB and did a blind scan and got nothing. Swung back to F1 and compared elevation with C-Band Vs KU and found to be within 1 degree. So I can line-up with KU, and then put on the C-Band and not have to make any elevation adjustment. Played with the skew again on F1 since that is the only C-Band that I have received and am still only receiving vertical channels. Still skewed about 40 degrees to peak the vertical channels. Pete, are you making any skew adjustments as you hit various sats - or did you set it and forget it? Also tried other sats besides PAS9 and came up empty.

Yes I adjust the skew as I move off the True South position, looking at your (GREAT) picture the "0" on the skew should be at the top for true south.

The other problem seems to be the same one I have, the C-Band LNBF is too high where it is at on the holder, so the elevation will have to be adjusted to hit the satellite signal.

I need to do some work on mine to get the LNBF as close to the exact focal distance but mainly the height.

C-Band LNBF

Here are a couple of pictures of my C-Band LNBF that I have adapted to my 36" dish. Not pretty but very effective. Now to tweak it some more. I have gotten 71% signal on G10R, but 0% quality so far using a Fortec Ultra.

LNB mount is from a 2 lnb holder and drilled to match the u-bolt. I removed the lnb holders. Added a rubber strip on top and tightened it up so it is not binding the throat of the LNB.

Nice Pictures!

Check Cascades post on his C-Band adventures for the correct skew position of the LNBF, his pictures seem to show the best position.

MrMilesG:

I'm expecting my LNBF any day now (tired of waiting) so I can experiment with it on my 36" Fortec. Have you tried to tweak the scaler ring? Tweaking really helps Cband reception. I notice, from your photograph, that the .6 F/D of the 36" Fortec goes way off the scale. It's my understanding that the scaler effect (cancelling interference from adjacent satellites while fully luminating the receiving dish) works on the offset dishes just as it does on the prime focus dishes. Haven't taken one apart but I'm told there are scalers behind the plastic waveguide covers on the offset LNBF's.

caddata, it depends entirely on your dish as to where the scalar rings are set and it makes a huge difference on my offset 1.2M.

As for the DMSI LNB the skew is way out of whack on an offset dish, I'll get a pic taken later of how it's supposed to look as you're looking toward the mouth of the LNB from the dish.
Those with DMSI LNBs can take the green plastic cap off and compare the probe orientation to how I have mine.

My LNB is here, as is my dish.. I just need my analog reciever to hurry up and get here, and I will be all set ;)

Which is a better dish

Do you have C-Band, KU band or both?
