311->VIP211 Reciever Upgrade - Poorer Picture Quality!

We currently have one HD Receiver (older 811) connected to a 52" LG DLP HDTV set which works very well. We have the older 5-channel HD package.

In another room we had an older non-HD 311 receiver. Both receivers are connected to a Dish500 dish and can see SATs 119 and 110. We do not (and cannot) have the optional second dish that would allow us to 'see' the third SAT required for the new HD package with all of the additional HD channels. So, when activating the new receiver, the Dish CSR set up the new box with the same, older HD package.

I decided to buy (outright) a new HD 211 receiver to replace the 311 receiver because I upgraded the second TV to an LG (32LCD2D) HD TV. I have connected the two using an HDMI cable. During the installation I made sure the 211 box was sending at 1080i (also tried 720p).

The software rev for the 211 is L345.

My problem is that the picture quality is now poorer than with the previous non-HD receiver. I have sound, I have picture, but the picture is not too hot. This is especially evident on the HD channels. On the other, older HD box the picture is beautiful, clear. On this newer box HD channels appear, 'grainy'.

Should I try component cabling? Is there something I may have missed in the setup?

I would appreciate any help you 'all can give me...

The 211 PQ is allot better than the 811. It should look allot better on HD Channels if not then you might look at adjusting your TV Settings. If you do this then you might see if Dish will swap out your current 211 for another one. If you get another one have same issues then it could be a cable issue so might try a different brand of HDMI cable. Either way the 211 is by far a better receiver than the 811.

Thanks for the reply Poke.

Problem solved...

There are two inputs on the back of the new HDTV:
One is marked "HDMI IN 2 ".
One is marked "HDMI IN 1(DVI)".

I had the receiver connected to the port marked with the "DVI" indication. I believe this is meant to receive output from a PC.

When I changed to the port marked "HDMI 2", the picture quality of both HD and 'normal' programming was as I would expect.

Hello, I'm new here.

Looking to switch from DTV
