211+usb storage = monthly dvr fee?

Actually I would be quite happy to pay the $5.99 a month. *If* I can buy my own drives, all current/future drive capacities will be handled, and I wont be limited to one drive. Locking them to a single receiver so they cant be traded around is a fair trade off. But then they might say I am asking for too much.

However, the ethernet media server idea still sounds better and I would happily scrap USB to get that one to happen. So long as I dont have to buy XP or Vista MCE ;-)

Remember.... give the people what they want.

I agree that I would rather use the server but I will use the external HD option until they can get the server option to work.

From my own research the ethernet media server is based on Windows Home Server that is still in beta and due to be released later this year. From current indications it will be sold as software and not directly tied to a manufacturer or device purchase meaning that you should be able to build your own box, install WHS and go(although that may change). What I have not found out yet is how the software will work with the DISH receivers(I am hoping that they do not tie it to HP boxes only but release a 'connector' software that will communicate with the receivers). I am trying to get on the Beta program for WHS so that as soon as external storage is enabled I can try to connect to the server and see what happens.

Why would it make business sense for E* to enable HDD support for a non dvr unit and not charge for the DVR capability?

If they do that, people would just buy a 211 and not a 622. I honestly feel they are justified in a one time fee or a monthly fee. Sorry.
