Bill,
OF COURSE Boras is going to say his clients would look good in NY or Boston, ALL of his clients would look good there, just ask him....

Jimbo,
I think Boras was referring to Lowe being capable of handling the media pressure in those two venues.

People interested in Coco Crisp, gee, he's been available for over 2 years now and no one picked him up, why now ?
Jimbo

Coco will be a very valuable commodity no matter where he ends up.

I love Coco's attitude.

Dodgers' offer to Manny reportedly for $25 million per

The [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad"]Moved Permanently[/ame] want a full-length feature of the [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974"]Manny Ramirez Stats, News, Photos - Los Angeles Dodgers - ESPN[/ame] show after last season's short.

General manager Ned Colletti said Wednesday that the Dodgers made an offer to the free-agent slugger, and their pitch would give him the second-highest average salary in the sport behind Yankees third baseman [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3115"]Alex Rodriguez Stats, News, Photos - New York Yankees - ESPN[/ame].

"If you saw the bid, it's nothing that we're embarrassed by," Colletti said at the GM meetings. "Manny was close to that number, anyway -- closer to that area than the last place he's been."

The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that the Dodgers' offer is believed to be for either two years at $50 million or three years for $75 million.

Rodriguez currently has the top average at $27.5 million under the 10-year deal he agreed to before last season. Mets pitcher [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4280"]Johan Santana Stats, News, Photos - New York Mets - ESPN[/ame] is second at $22.9 million under the six-season deal he agreed to before the '08 season.

Ramirez, acquired from Boston on July 31, is coming off a $160 million, eight-year contract he signed with the Red Sox before the 2001 season.

"We said, 'Think about it for a while. It's not going to be there forever,'" Colletti said. "Things are always subject to change, and it depends on what else we do, to some extent. I've been asked a few times here if we're going to wait to see what happens with this before we do anything else. But I'm not sure we're going to have the luxury to do that. If there's something else that comes about that we feel we need to do, and the timeliness is there to do it, we'll have to do it."

When the Dodgers were eliminated from the playoffs last month, Ramirez expressed a desire to test the market.

"I want to see who is the highest bidder. Gas is up and so am I," he said then.

I read this morning that the Phillies new GM was interested in Jake Peavy. Any chance it could happen? Is Reuben Amaro Jr. really a GM now. Man am I old or what? I remember when his dad played for the Phillies. He and Bobby Wine shared shortstop. Neither hit much but both were outstanding with the glove.

geonaz,
What a 1-2 punch Hamels and Peavy would make!!!

Here's the latest Peavy rumors I've seen:

Jake Peavy Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes

11:00pm: Meanwhile, Yahoo's Tim Brown says the Braves, Cubs, and Cardinals are all working out contigency plans to replace the players they'd use in a Peavy deal.
10:53pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs are the frontrunner for Peavy, "perhaps even ahead of the Braves." He says the Cubs also want to re-sign Ryan Dempster. The Cubs' dream rotation would be Peavy, Carlos Zambrano, Dempster, Ted Lilly, and Rich Harden.
The Braves had a window of exclusivity to hammer out a Peavy trade, but that has apparently passed. The Padres like the Cubs' young pitching, even if it doesn't match Atlanta's.
If the Cubs pull this off, they'd have to cut costs by perhaps letting Kerry Wood go and going cheaper in right field.

Jason Varitek wants $52.4 mil from Red Sox

If the Red Sox were entertaining thoughts that their efforts to re-sign free agent catcher Jason Varitek were going to be easy, they learned otherwise yesterday. Agent Scott Boras told reporters that New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada's four-year, $52.4 million deal, which was agreed to last offseason, will serve as a benchmark for any team looking to land Varitek. "It's probably representative, age-wise," Boras said, "and it's also representative of what a player on a winning team (is worth). You're not going to have many catchers who have the performance levels and a 60 percent winning percentage on a franchise and have won two world championships and caught four no-hitters. The idea of it is that there just aren't many in the marketplace that can lead a club like Jason Varitek and that's going to be his value." -- Boston Herald

FOX Sports on MSN - - Ben Maller's MLB rumors

Sorry....but Jorge Posada is a much better catcher than Varitek. Boras is on crack to think Varitek is....

Aren't both of these guys in their mid-thirties? Just about the time when the physical toll of catching, catch's up with the body? (No pun intended). The only buyers I would see for Varitek would be contenders misiing the "final piece". I for one would not be dangling any long-term contracts at him.

Thanks for your service and the memories Jason!

Time to be moving on now.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes [November 6 at 10:12am CST]
[ame]http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3685673&name=olney_buster[/ame], the Nationals are preparing to make a significant offer to Mark Teixeira. Olney believes the Angels will make an offer in the $100-120MM range, but that offer will expire soon. If and when Scott Boras passes on that proposal, it might be the Yankees, Red Sox, Nationals, and Orioles competing for Tex.

The Nationals???!!!

Signing Tex would give the Nats instant credibility!

Hideki Matsui-Mariners Rumor

By Tim Dierkes

From Yahoo's Tim Brown:
One source mentioned a potential three-way deal that would send outfielder Hideki Matsui from the New York Yankees to the Seattle Mariners for a pitching prospect, perhaps Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Yankees would package the prospect with second baseman Robinson Cano and another young player to the Rockies for Matt Holliday.
Matsui has a full no-trade clause. He's owed $13MM next year, the last of his deal. He hit .294/.370/.424 this year in 378 plate appearances, missing much of the season with knee problems. He now has two surgically repaired knees, so he's questionable to play the outfield.
At any rate, it doesn't seem like the Yankees would seriously explore a Holliday trade unless Mark Teixeira signs elsewhere first. And does it make sense for the Mariners to give up a young pitcher and take on a risky DH like Matsui?

Phillies Rumors: Howard, Schilling, Madson

By Tim Dierkes [November 6 at 9:38am CST]
Checkin' in on the Phillies...
  • GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had an informal five-minute talk with Casey Close, who represents Ryan Howard and Joe Blanton.
  • Talks have not yet begun with free agents Pat Burrell, Jamie Moyer, and Scott Eyre. Conversations will begin soon with Moyer and Eyre.
  • Curt Schilling would be open to returning to the Phillies if he pitches next year. Amaro says he hasn't even considered the possibility yet. He would make a nice fifth starter if they can re-sign Moyer.
  • The Phillies control setup man Ryan Madson through 2009, but he's represented by Scott Boras. Boras compared Madson to Mariano Rivera circa 1996, so don't look for an affordable long-term deal.
  • Amaro talked to at least 27 other GMs at the meetings.
  • No word yet from the Philly writers on Andrew Baggarly's rumor that the Phils will listen on Jimmy Rollins.

KCK,
you've probably already seen this, but just in case you didn't:

Offseason Outlook: Los Angeles Angels

By Tim Dierkes

Next up in our Offseason Outlook series, the Angels. Here's how their 25-man roster might look using only internal candidates:

C - Mike Napoli - $425K
C - Jeff Mathis - $415K
1B - Kendry Morales - $600K
2B - Howie Kendrick - $433K
SS - Erick Aybar - $415K
3B - Brandon Wood - $400K
IF - Maicer Izturis - $1.2MM+
IF/OF - Robb Quinlan - $1.05MM+
LF - Chone Figgins - $4.75MM+
CF - Torii Hunter - $17.5MM
RF - Gary Matthews Jr. - $10MM
OF - Reggie Willits - $433K
DH/OF - Vladimir Guerrero - $15MM (club option)
SP - John Lackey - $9MM (club option)
SP - Ervin Santana - $420K+
SP - Jered Weaver - $435K
SP - Joe Saunders - $425K
SP - Dustin Moseley - $420K
RP - Scot Shields - $5MM
RP - Jose Arredondo - $400K
RP - Justin Speier - $4.75MM
RP - Jason Bulger - $400K
RP - Kevin Jepsen - $400K
RP - Darren O'Day - $400K
RP -

Other commitments: Garret Anderson - $3MM, Kelvim Escobar - $9.5MM (ready by All-Star break?)

That's about $87MM committed, plus arbitration raises to Izturis, Quinlan, Figgins, and Santana. So that'll put them in the low $90MM range. The Angels were at $124MM this year. Owner Arte Moreno wants to keep payroll there, but could make exceptions for the right players. We'll say they have at least $30MM to spend, maybe more.
Three star players/free agents should be under consideration: Mark Teixeira, Francisco Rodriguez, and C.C. Sabathia. Teixeira makes the most sense, especially since Morales' '08 minor league line translates to a .740 OPS in the bigs. Given their .330 team OBP, the Angels could really use Tex's .400.
Losing both K-Rod and Darren Oliver would hurt the pen; the Angels will probably bring in some kind of veteran help. With Escobar slated to miss a good chunk of '09, one more starter is also needed. It'd be tough to cram Tex and Sabathia into the budget, but the free agent market offers plenty of other starters.
I know the Angels have their own run-scoring style, but it's hard to argue against getting on base more often. With that in mind I'd make Tex top priority. With the DH spot semi-open, I'd also consider Milton Bradley. Brian Giles, Adam Dunn, Magglio Ordonez, Jason Giambi, Prince Fielder, Bobby Abreu, and Pat Burrell are other big names who get on base. (Manny Ramirez fits as well, though it'd have to be him instead of Teixeira rather than both).
$30-40MM is a lot of spending money, though $20MM+ ('09 salary) could go toward Teixeira or Sabathia. I might take my chances with the fifth starter job and bring in Teixeira and another high-OBP player.

I'd also consider Milton Bradley. Brian Giles, Adam Dunn, Magglio Ordonez, Jason Giambi, Prince Fielder, Bobby Abreu, and Pat Burrell

Milton Bradley Lord above, NO!!!!
Brian Giles Only if cheap
Adam Dunn (see above)
Magglio Ordonez That'd be a good one!
Jason Giambi Hmmmmm.....not sure
Prince Fielder The jury is stiil out on him for me. I don't really KNOW who this kid is. He is inconsistent.
Bobby Abreu Only if cheap
Pat Burrell I would have said no until the post season. Now I'll say maybe

Whoever ends up with Adam Dunn better be in the AL, where he can DH, because you certainly don't want that boy out in the field trying to catch something other than a cold!!!,,,

Latest Red Sox Rumors

By Cork Gaines [November 6 at 1:12pm CST]

A few notes on the Red Sox...

From Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe
  • Scott Boras met with Theo Epstein about Jason Varitek. Boras is still seeking a deal similar to the one signed by Jorge Posada (four years/$52.4MM).
  • Epstein continues to look at other catchers including Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden. Cafardo also notes that the Red Sox could go after a veteran through the trade market like Bengie Molina.
  • Other teams have expressed interest in both Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo, but noted that Lugo would not be part of a deal to the White Sox. Cafardo says the Tigers could be a good match for Lugo if the Red Sox take Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis noting they could even eat some of Lugo's remaining contract.
  • The Red Sox are likely out of the market for CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett.
Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald adds to the Lugo and Crisp rumors.
One executive at the general managers meetings talked to the Sox recently estimated that “five or six” teams have shown a willingness to discuss a deal for Crisp...The line being formed to bid for shortstop Julio Lugo, on the other hand, is not nearly as long - though it isn’t nonexistent.
McAdam lists several teams that could be interested in Crisp, including the White Sox, A's, Braves and Padres. However, McAdam notes that the Cubs are not interested. He also lists some clubs that could have a need for a player like Lugo, including the Cardinals, Twins, Indians, Tigers, O's and Giants. McAdam sees the White Sox as the best fit, but notes that they will seek more than Lugo in return for Javier Vazquez or Nick Swisher.

Instant credibility meaning they get the big fish in the free agent pool.

That sounds good, but you need to sign a guy who can help you improve in the win-loss standings.

Example- In 2004, Baltimore signed Miguel Tejada- while he had a MONSTER year, the team still stunk. Teams need to sign guys who will improve wins and losses, not put butts in the seats!

I'm confused, so you're saying that the Nationals would be better off without Teixeira than they would be with him???!!!

The above question goes for on the field performance and PR (as in, yes Nats fans, we are FINALLY trying to put a winning product on the field).

Now remember, BEFORE you answer that:

I'M NOT SAYING THE NATIONALS WOULD BE A PENNANT CONTENDER WITH TEX!! ;)
