Did Utah go through such a brutal schedule? And a championship game? No. Would OU, USC, Florida or Texas have gone undefeated with Utah's schedule? Ummm, yes!that's one team.....but through all that....did they finish undefeated? hmmm??

And which 4 teams did the Utes beat this year??? I'm looking at their schedule on ESPN and it only lists them playing 3 ranked teams this year....
TCU
BYU
Alabama
Sorry, but those wins are a lot less inspiring than Texas', Oklahoma's or several SEC teams. Rick Reily's wrong on this one.

Good Call and One that I agree with.
Typical over the top pointless drivel from a washed up hack like Reilly.
If you're gullible enough to fall for a schlock ESPN writer's ramblings, shame on you."....shoulda, woulda, coulda...and if my aunt had balls....she'd be my uncle....."
LMAO!!! Sooner or later...someone was gonna use the "shoulda", "woulda" or "coulda".....

Maybe Boise State was the best team in the country two years ago when they beat OU in the Fiesta Bowl and finished undefeated. They beat Oregon State and Utah too.
.......... riiiiight.
Not sure what you think my logic is. OU, Florida, Texas, USC and Utah are where the system put them. The system involves coaches, computers and polls. None of them rank Utah as #1....
...but if we use your logic, then Oklahoma should have played tOSU...and Texas should be in the Championship game....
Only because he has probably written something about your team at some point or another ...and NOW, he is a hack...them moment he writes something you like....he won't be THAT much of a hack right?
:up:upWhats wrong with USC? Its not their fault they are the best team in the PAC10.. They do their part, the rest of the conference needs to step up. Its also not USCS fault that they kill the big10 each rose bowl.
Texas had their shot. All they had to do was beat a mediocre (according to some) Texas Tech team, and they'd be in the game.
They didn't. OU beat the team that beat Texas, and the tiebreakers fell our way. The Big-12 tiebreaker system is tailored to advance the team that's playing better at the end of the season. Clearly, that was OU. Mac Brown can blow smoke up ESPN's a** all he wants, but Texas blew their chance at the BCS title in Lubbock.
You saw the hurry up offense that Texas used in the 2nd half. That's OU's offense. They do it better than Texas, and Florida's never seen anything like it.
I think he has a valid point. EVERYONE HERE fights for the NON Big Conferences in basketball, but not in football? And I would assume you would bitch because YOUR team in playing in the championship game...AND your team is mentioned in the piece, so therefore ....you have an agenda...and there is NOTHING wrong with that because I would EXPECT you to fight for it....
...but if we use your logic, then Oklahoma should have played tOSU...and Texas should be in the Championship game....

Let me say it even more strongly. There has been a lot of talk on this thread about the fact that USC is far better than any other Pac-10 team. And then the people saying that either say or imply that in the Big-12 or the SEC USC would just be one among many. Ridiculous! Starting with the third year of the Pete Carroll era USC has been, athletically speaking, far superior to every college team in every conference, with the exception of the Vince Young Texas team that beat them in the 2006 Rose Bowl. USC had previously destroyed a favored Oklahoma team. They have pummeled Ohio State more than once. They humbled Penn State this year. Their early-season non-conference schedule has been far stiffer than the leading Big-10, Big-12, and SEC non-conference schedules, and they have won them all.
The reason USC has not been the national champion for five out of the last six years is their mental and emotional immaturity. Carroll has no trouble getting them ready for bowl games or big early-season non-conference games. If USC were allowed to play either Oklahoma or Florida this year they would pulverize them. Their problem is, they have over-inflated egos. When playing against a clearly inferior opponent they sometimes don't bother to work at all. So they have suffered championship-killing losses to really bad Stanford, Oregon State, UCLA, and Notre Dame teams. For that reason, I am not saying USC deserves to be the national champion this year or any of the last few years when they didn't win it. I am saying that Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida should be very thankful they are not playing USC this year.
By the way, the Pac-10 is not as weak overall as people think, as was demonstrated by its 5-0 bowl record this year. Oregon beating Oklahoma State and Utah stomping Alabama should serve as wake up calls to the Big-12 and the SEC. They are benefiting from past greatness just like the Big-10 did for several years. (Yes, I know Utah is not in the Pac-10.)
I agree that, in spite of going undefeated, Utah probably doesn't deserve the number one spot. Their schedule truly was weak. But their win over Alabama was no fluke. They dominated them. And Alabama almost beat Florida.
Here are two games we will never see, but which I would love to see:
#1---USC versus Utah. I think USC would win, but they would have a tougher time with Utah than with either Oklahoma or Florida.
#2---USC versus the Oregon team that began the season.
At the start of this season Oregon had a phenomenal team. But within their first few games they were decimated by injuries. The Oregon that beat Oklahoma State was a pretty good team, but was a mere shadow of what they once were.
And Sandra, this is one guy that will never say anything bad about the song girls!
They have pummeled Ohio State more than once.

There is no requirement to install an undefeated team as #1. Even a two loss team (LSU last year) could be #1. A case COULD be made for all of them to claim #1.
The winner of OU/Florida will have the best case.
Couldn't be more wrong salsa.
Reilly's been an irrelevant hack for years.
Jason Whitlock had a blurb in one of his recent columns about what a fraud Reilly has been for years.
This column only adds to that perception for my taste anyway.
If you like Reilly and his style that's fine also.

More fodder for the 12-16 team playoff :up

You just said how good Pete Carroll is and how great the USC team is, then you post this :
The reason USC has not been the national champion for five out of the last six years is their mental and emotional immaturity. Carroll has no trouble getting them ready for bowl games or big early-season non-conference games. If USC were allowed to play either Oklahoma or Florida this year they would pulverize them. Doesn't this point directly at the coach not having his teams ready mentally and emotionally ?
