what size of dish do i need also best transponder to find 148 or 61

I can't say for sure whether you would be able to get either one but I know this: Because of your extreme northern location, both satellites are probably sitting very, very low on the horizon. You would probably have to point them so low that even a short obstruction would block your dish's view. Even then, you would probably need a very large dish.

Well, you don't post a city, but http://www3.telus.net/rampage/skew.htm gives a decent number (23.5) for Winnipeg for 61.5 - low but not horrible. 148 on the other hand is at 15.68 elevation - much more difficult.

Well, that changes things. AZ/EL for 61.5 is 138.32/18.69 and 148 is 235.37/12.63.

61.5 is still easier (duh), but obstructions are definitely a BIG issue. Without calculating it, you need about 3:1 clearance. That means the nearest 40' obstruction in line with the bird has to be 120' away.

Finally, that's not really in the CONUS footprint - but might be OK.
