I just set up a Primestar dish over the weekend, with one of PSB's lnbf's. I've played with KU since last fall, but am just getting started with the c-band experiment. I've had similar experiences to yours with KU, although I think there's some pro sports in 4:2:2 format. The NBA finals is a good example. There's also a fair bit on some of the regular KU channels, particularly on G10. It does seem like there's more pro sports on c-band though.

The pro sports in 4:2:2 are mostly the games that are on ABC, i.e. Sunday NBA during the season, playoffs, etc, not the games that I can't get with analog cable. The other pro sports in 4:2:2 is Hockey Night in Canada on C-band, which I have an abundance since I have Canadian DBS. The NBA on TNT was on Ku analog a few years ago, around the time I first got the analog receiver. They have also changed to 4:2:2. However, games on TNT are not games I worry about since it's also on cable.

In other words, the 4:2:2 broadcasts are not games that I can't get otherwise. The games on analog, on the other hand, are mostly games fed back to the local markets for OTA or Fox Sports Net broadcasts. These are games that one can get only if one has NBA League Pass or NHL Center Ice. Since I don't have the time to watch that many games, I'll skip the LP/CI. As a matter of fact, even if I can get C-band analog with my 120cm, it's still almost impossible for me to watch the games. Working in high-tech on the west coast along with a long commute, I usually get home after the west coast games are over (i.e. around 10 p.m. Pacific time), never mind the east coast games. So this hobby mainly for weekends...

Ice, yep - Anik is by far the strongest, ASN and NewsWorld are burning my cable they're so strong.

have to try that tongiht...hopefully :)
(its freakin hot and humid here today)

iceberg, asn and newsworld are on a very strong transponder(s), i was able to get them last winter even tho my bud wasnt aimed properly.

cool
thanks guys!

If you have an earthquake tonight...dont worry. Its just me jumping up and down because I got C-band :D

Anik was the strongest by far up til now, G10R gave me nice results too.
I'm concentrating more on AMC1 and 4 today.
AMC1 isn't too bad at all, I'm breaking out the Dremel again in a few to see if I can't sort this scalar ring out.
Ideally I want G3, it's eluding me so far.
Cascade, The equity transponders on g3 seem to be fairly weak even with my 10' BUD, only around a 45-50% sq with the pansat 2700a.

drhydro

what about any other TP's on G3?

(I have a dish at G3 that I would like to just reaim and get something on :)

iceberg, i cant remember off the top of my head, but i will check as soon as i get home and post for you.

I've been trying with an old expressvu 27" dish. I have an old c band lnbf, stuck on horizontal (old 12v switchable I believe)...anyways I welded up a mount for the lnbf and checked out a few weeks ago....nada. Not sure if its the cone around the lnbf or the angle of the lnbf. I will post some of the install later tonight for all to see, as well as some side view shots to show the angle. I figured Anik was the best one and tried to lock on that as well as G11, but like I said no luck. Even if it doesn't work, kept me busy and out of trouble at the local bar......so......wifes happy. :)

sharris, keep plugging away at it :)

Thomas, can you post a strong T5 transponder along with the G3? I'm having trouble with T5, I've hit everything from G4R -> West but nothing East of it.

Cheers.

I sure hope you get something :) , I live in the same part of the world as you and have been closely following the 120cm C band discussion with an eye to getting something going this summer.

I been trying to come up with an estimate of the minimum dish size I would need to get useable signal from some of the satellites. Unfortunately for us up here we are not in the centre of the beam footprints for most satellites unlike those in much of the U.S. (Anik F1 should be our best bet though as it biased toward southern Canada)

I estimate that we are 2-3 dB down in power for many of the sats compared to what Cascade for example will see from the U.S. east coast (looking at the EIRP footprints through lyngsat).

I made a list for myself of the EIRP for C band sats viewable from here. Keep in mind that some of those contour maps are pretty crude and the info may not be accurate to begin with. Plus these are max EIRP and a transponder will not necessarily use the max power.

PAS9 39
AMC6 40
AMC3 39.5
G11 38
IA6 38
G3C 40
IA5 37
G4R 41
AMC4 40
AMC1 39
ANIK F1 42
IA13 41
G10R 41
IA7 41
AMC10 40
AMC11 40
AMC7 39
AMC8 40
ANIK F2 40+

I couldn't find info for G12 or G13

Any time someone reports what signal they get and has a known location I reference my handy-dandy list to compare my EIRP to theirs and use their dish size to estimate my requirements.

As I have time constraints and wife and baby constraints :D I don't have much time to play plus I have a definite target satellite in mind that I want to receive from (PAS9) on C-band. Thus I want to make sure before I invest any time and money that what I do has good chance of working. Right now my estimate for PAS9 leans towards a 1.8m dish. If I could find a 1.2m dish I would start playing with it now.

I tilt my hat to all of you who are experimenting. You are truly pioneers. And a big lump of coal to those whose knee jerk response about C-band is that "it will never work without an 8.5ft dish [because I have one...]". Fortunately this forum has a great many open minded people on it. :)

howdy folks,

here are some of the sq readings i am getting off of g3

scans as-sng (this is a feed, no vid or audio)
tp 3866v symb 3.074 vid 3866 aud 4131
sq=99

scans as-308 sng (roberts test card)
tp 3866v symb 3.074 vid 3866 aud 4131
sq=~90

scans as-dom 9-10 (VOA, now showing a jazz concert)
tp 3723v symb vid 3866 aud 4131
sq=90

the tube sq=60

hope this helps ya all out

My Patriot 1.2 meter dish arrived today and it's a beauty. It's still in the box and they do pack them well - strong box on a pallet, etc. Seems like it will be light enough to motorize with perhaps a HH120. The offset C-Band LNBF should arrive either late this week or early next week then the serious fun can begin. I can easily see from PAS 3 to Anik F2 so there will lots of stops in between. Hopefully the assembly can begin this weekend on the pole now reserved for the P* dish. Photos of course will follow. :D

these readings are all taken off of a 10 pierced aluminum bud, pansat 2700a, with 20 degree cal amp LNB on a chapperal coroter

Cheers Tom, I can't get a thing off either of them the way my dish is at the moment.
Too dark outside to do anything about it tonight, back out tomorrow.

I would like to join in on all the fun you guys are having with C Band!!

Question - C Band with a 6 foot dish, Would a Prime Focus work fine or is the Off Set dish so much better?

Sadoun has the 6 foot Prime Focus for $135.00 and a 6 foot Off Set at Eye In The Sky is $399.00

Either way I think the C-band deal would work. Only downfall is of course you'll be stationary on one satellite, or moving it by hand. The 120cm MicroBUD setup is sweet becuase it's the best of both worlds; a whole new band of channels to explore, while still having Diseqc access to the whole arc (or whatever one can see of it through the Amazon rainforest surrounding some people's house ;) )

I would have to install the 6 foot prime focus on a polar mount with a motor. Once you have a motor which accesses the arc, there is no going back!!
