I did it. I've upgraded to DVRs for the Den, MBR and Man Cave. I'm supposed to be getting H24R receivers. The question is, do I have to use SWM, or can I just run them off the dish like my current DVR setup using a splitter?

The HR24 doesn't have to be on swm. You can't use a splitter in a non swm setup. You must have a multiswitch, not a splitter. Can you post a picture of it or get the model number off it?

He can use a SWM Splitter, IF he's going to go the SWM route (Note to OP, this is a special splitter designated for SWM only).

Yes you can also set it up without the SWM as long as you have a WB68 multiswitch.

Make sure you run all 4 lines from LNB to MS.

If your LNB only has 1 output, you'll need to replace it with the older one (4 outputs from the LNB head.) or go the swm route.

Thanks, good to know. The dish is a slimline with 4 lines coming out of the LNB. Got it about the multiswitch.

What recvrs are you gonna end up with, wanting to know how many tuners all together you'll be setting up.

5 total, 3 independent DVR, 2 HD non DVR. I'll work on a diagram and post it.

Thanks for all the replies, you all are a great help.

As long as there isnt a HR34 in the bunch you would be fine tuner wise as you have 8 there
If you went SWM all you need is the 8 way splitter

Question, if I go with SWM, do I have to change the dish? I have an old Slimline with the 4 outputs on the LNB.

Well, guess I should have called in the order and requested specific receivers, don't know if that would have done any good, though. I did my ordering online. I suppose the new customers get the good stuff?

The receivers came in today. The two DVRs are H21 700s. Manufactured in Dec 07. Will they work with a SWM switch?

The two HDs are H23 600s. The single input on the back is labeled SWM1. Will they work with the standard dish or is a SWM required? If SWM is required, I'll have to change the LNB.

Should I call and complain or just let it be? Do I have a choice?

The DVRs must be recycled since they didn't come with remotes or wires, other than the power cable. The HDs had a bag with RCA, HDMI and power cables in it, along with a new IR remote. DTV wants 25 for a RF remote, I just bought a new RF remote last week off flea bay for <8.

One of the DVRs was free, the other was 199, the two HDs were 99 each.

Guess DTV is just cheaping out on me.

Everything they sent will work with swm or non swm. That doesn't address the fact that they sent you used equipment. Although it's not unusual, it doesn't make it right. There is no point in contacting Directv through the normal channels, they can't guaranty any particular model dvr unless it's the HR34. I would email ellen.filipiak@directv.com and tell them what happened. It's the Office of the President. Explain to them that they said you would be getting HR24s. They may be able to help.

Sadly, I don't think I have a leg to stand on. I ordered based on what I saw on the website which was H24R. I went back and looke carefully at the website and unfortunately, they have a disclaimer in the form of giving specifications for an H24R, but underneath it give dimensions for "other" receivers. I never actually talked with anyone about it.

I can live with it as long as they work ok. I do appreciate the reply, though. You've been very helpful.
