I notice that for certain DMAs (for instance, mine in Buffalo), DirecTV requires "zip code confirmation" to provide local channels. What is the reasoning behind this, and how exactly do they "confirm" your zip code? Just curious...
 
I think the zip code confirmation you're referring to maybe to determine what equipment is needed. Along time ago when they were rolling out the locals some locals could be picked up with the single LNB but most required an equipment upgrade (which is now pretty much the standard equipment provided)
 
I think what the OP REALLY means, is that on D*'s locals qualification site, they also ask for a county in some zips - this is because some zip codes cross county lines & the DMA boundaries are usually on county lines.

ALL markets though, require zip code qualification, because that's also how D* determines which DMA you're in.
