Your Thoughts on an 18 game NFL Schedule?

I think whats more disturbing is that players have to hide the fact that they have concussions. Something should be done about that. Nobody should have to hide an injury. The article citing Colt McCoy, he should have never gone back into the game anyway. Thats whoever is in charges fault and James Harrison who applied the hit. They are adding doctors on the sideline which is needed. 28 out of 44 NFL players said that its safer than it was in 2009.

How about stricter penalites on helmet to helmet hits? Better equimpment like what was mentioned above. How about maybe a weight restriction so a 300 lb guy doesnt sack a 150 lb guy? That might cause a concussion or two.

Only issue I would have would be the incidental H2H hits ...
The officials should look at that in the first place, stop the play and look at it to see if it was indeed intentional or incidental, there are also incidental H2H hits that are being called, while others not.

So, you read the first few words instead of the whole sentence ?
Mini Episodes (each play) that build up over time ...

I don't think they are talking about over many years here.

Like you said earlier in the thread, injuries are part of the game. But saying there is a concussion every play is like saying there's a torn ACL every tackle.

You said every play, and you said concussion and then defended using that term for a half dozen posts. Do the math, that's 100+ concussions per game, as many as 16 games a weekend... That's where the 1000+ comes from, and it's closer to 2000 plays most weekends if not past it most likely.

for sure there's more that needs to be done. McCoy thing could've ended a lot worse.

EVERY OFFENSIVE RUNNING PLAY involves a helmet to helmet hit between either the O and D linemen or the fullback coming thru the hole, for those using fullbacks.

The argument about concussions is valid and yes, more has to be done. But if you look and say every play a player will get a concussion, there wouldnt be any football because players wouldnt be allowed to play and rightfully so. So is there a solution to this problem?

And those plays you could argue there could be a higher incidence of concussions as there is legal helmet to helmet contact on those plays.

There still isn't a concussion every play, at least your statement has been widdled down to just under 500 per weekend (30 rushes per game, 16 potential games).

If every play a lineman was required to block for someone (which is every single play) they suffered a concussion then people like Mark Schlerith would be less animated than Muhammed Ali rather than enjoying a broadcast career.

Pretty sure there's only a few players currently on an injury report or IR because of a concussion, do you really think several hundred players are all hiding theirs right now? After all, we're 16 * 1600 plays into the season.

I really didn't expect to have to cut it down to x amount of plays for you.

As for Schlerath, how many concussions do you suppose he had during his playing career ?

Should ask him some time, how many were reported vs how many time he felt his Bell got rung and played thru it.

In TODAYS game, if you get your bell rung and the team knows it, they will sit you down.
Thus MANY are playing thru it and not saying anything.

Biggest first step is to process people out of the league that headhunt. Harrison says he wont change after 5 offenses and his first suspension. Theres no place in a safer NFL for that kind of player.

Next is going all the way with what the NFL is starting to do after the McCoy incident and have independent doctors with the ability to overrule the team about a players status during a game.

Absent that there needs to be transparency and severe penalties for teams that do not follow the concussion guidelines. The Steelers, again at fault there. Polamalu's concussion vs the Chiefs they never once labeled a concussion to duck the rules. But at halftime he was held out 'due to league rules' per the Steelers... The only league rule I'm aware of that means you can't return to play is being diagnosed with a concussion and being ejected... The following week he was 'being monitored for concussion-like-symptoms' but was never labeled as officially having one.

A 3rd party needs the authority to be able to take the judgement call for someone to be evaluated for a concussion out of the hands of people caught up in the moment of the game. That player then needs to be removed from the hectic field of play and evaluated in a calm environment and then go from there.

You didn't need to break it down to x plays, you said a concussion happens every single play.

Obviously you have your opinion, everyone has provided simple facts and examples of why it is wrong, nobody has supported what you've said and you are sticking to your guns. You clearly aren't willing to listen to logic or facts so I'm walking away from the argument, it will just result in more pointless back and forth. Feel free to post a last word, I don't see it changing anyone's mind.

No to an 18 game regular season! The current format works fine the only reason for adding 2 more regular season games is for the NFL to make more money.Lord knows they are strapped for cash as it is.:rolleyes:

They wouldn't add two games. They would just switch two meaningless preseason games to be regular games. They already charge full price for the BS games, so it's not alot different.

Certainly debatable. If a team is out of the playoff hunt no chance whatsoever the last few weeks of the regular season home games would most likely be non sellout.Add to that 2 more games blacked out on local tv.Fwiw the majority of players are strongly opposed to the idea. It's the owners that want to push it simply for more revenue.

PLease tell us how they would earn more revenue.

Maybe on the TV contract, but you are implying they will make oodles more. From where?

Steelers took him out at halftime.
He didn't come back ...
The teams do NOT need to disclose injuries, look at the Patriots, they NEVER talk about injuries if they can get away with it.

Well, if you were to look, I said RUNNING PLAYS a long ways back, but you continue to say I said EVERY play.
I did change, you didn't.

Bingo you answered your own question.Tv contracts,tv contracts are making the NFL billions of dollars just look at what ESPN paid for MNF.They are shopping another 8 game package for Thursday nights,if they can add 2 more games to any package then they will ask for more money. The owners have admitted that the reason they want to add games is for more revenue.Anyone that kept up with the lockout and the new cba knows.

Anybone who knows anything about these TV contracts will know that 2 games will not earn them billions of more dollars.

as me no i think the NFL will become too boring, i think it will happen but, not in the few years, because last summer the players want no part of it, and everytime it was brought up the owners got shut down, i know it the NFL commissioner dream to have 18-game season but i think its won't happen anytime soon
