I just got a new Hopper 3 and a Joey (new subscriber). Sometimes when I turn ON either TV, I get a strange message (probably in Chinese it makes sense), "Your Hopper will go into standby in X minutes Press the power button to turn your TV off To watch TV press any button". What does it mean, I just turned the damn TV on, why would I want to turn it off, why do I get this message?

It means your TV was off, but your receiver was already on, you hit the power button to turn both on but it actually turned the receiver off and the TV on. When you turn on Hopper/Joeys with the Voice Remote, it puts the receivers into a 5 minute countdown before they actually power off. You can just hit any button, I use Select, to wake it back up
Using your remote do this.

Thanks, then what is the advantage of leaving the Hopper/Joey ON for 5 minutes after you turned the TV OFF. Why doesn't the Hopper/Joey go into standby as soon as you turn the TV off?
Well, have you ever turned your TV off by mistake. If the Hopper went to standby immediately the rewind cache would flush and you would lose rewind, that could suck with a game. With the delay you can turn the TV back on rewind to the point the TV went off and not miss any of the game. Just one reason off the top of my head.
Also, you can pause in one room, turn the power off, the receiver goes into a 5 minute countdown, giving you that time to move to another room, power up and pick up on the show you were watching at the moment you paused it.
It's not, because the other remotes have separate buttons mapped specifically for the receiver and the TV, so the Receiver Power button powers it directly on and off

Actually I use a 40.0 with my Joey 3's and get the same message. It's annoying but I just press Select and it goes away. Wish I didn't have to do it every time though!
I get the same message with my 40 remote as well as my ancient 6.3 remotes in IR mode. Yes, they have separate buttons for power on/off for the TV and the receiver. When I turn off the receiver alone, I see that message. I always assumed it was to allow people to switch TVs and resume where they left off.
Really? When I press Select, the receiver turns back on again.
Just to be clear, with my 40.0 remotes, if I leave the TV on, but press the Hopper/Joey power button on the remote, I get a black screen with an image the hops around, usually an ad for a show, like Billions recently, or something Dish-specific, like the voice remotes. I have never noticed a message stating my Hopper will go into standby in X minutes. I will check when I get home. I assumed the screen with the image that hops around was the standby mode.
I get the message on my hopper and Joey. It just means that when you hit the on power button the tv turns on and the hopper is going to bed because It was all ready on . Hit the select button and move on. It’s is really no big deal and really doesn’t were my thumb out to much by hitting select.

I've only seen the 5 minute count down when using 54.0 remotes.
Personally I like it. I’ve gotten my TV and Joey out of sync before with the instant off..TVon/Joeyoff TVoff/Joeyon. With the Joey waiting a bit before turning off, it resolves any sync issues if I really didn’t want to turn it off.

You can shut the receiver off by pressing the voice command and saying “turn off”. I do this and press the TV button and then power to turn off. To turn everything back on, I simply just press the say button.
I always found this behavior annoying when I had DirecTV. I'd rather have the extra button press than this, or even better, the behavior Tivo has/had where there is no standby mode. Does this really save any power? Perhaps I don't see it because I do not have HDMI-CEC enabled on my Dish receivers?
