Bill Maden, a very close friend of George Steinbrener, had a meeting with the Boss this weekend. According to Bill, George stated that Torres' days are done and that sweet Lou Piniella will be brought to manage the 2007 Yankees.
There is speculation that Alex Rodriguez will be traded in the off-season. The Yankees owe him 66million dollars for the next 4 years (Texas is paying the rest of the contract). The Yankees had had enough of the A-Rod poor post season numbers. Who they can trade him to will be interested since it is believed that the team is going to ask for George to carry some of the $66million owe to Alex Rodriguez.
Mussina's option will not be picked up and the Yankees will be in negotiation to bring him back for one year at a reasonable price. "This reasonable" price means that Mussina might get only money that a 4th or 5th starter could get from the Yankees. If Mussina asks for more than one year or more money, it has been speculated that the Yankees will not bring the right hander and will say goodbye.
Gary Schefield's option will not be picked up either and it is very likely that the Yankees will part ways with him.
B. Williams is a free agent and has been one of the corner stone of the Yankees since 1995. However, the Yankees may opt to not bring Williams back. There is a good chance that Bernie will stay with the club in 2007.
As to other options, there are very few the Yankees can make with their big contract players. R. Johnson will be back for the final year of his contract (that will be a relieved and hopefully will disappear from Yankee land). Wright is also in the same boat. As to young prospect, K. Hughes may be ready to jump into the ML in 2007. The left hander has been regarded as a good prospect within the organization.
