Xbox 360 resolution setting?

I have a Hitachi 57F510 RPTV. Native resolution is 1080i. Trying to figure out what the better 360 setting should be, 720 or 1080i. They both look the same to me. The TV does accept 720. Here's what I'm trying to figuire out. Is there any converting going on if the 360 is set to 1080i and the game supports 720p?

I think your TV is taking the 720p from the 360 and converting it to 1080i so it looks almost the same.

If the game is set to 720P and you have your Xbox set to output 1080i, then the xbox is converting the signal. If you have the xbox set to output 720P then your TV is converting the signal from 720P to 1080i.

If your TV is 1080i, then it really doesn't matter which setting you set your XBOX--720P or 1080i. Just set the XBOX to 1080i and forget about it.

Of course, if your TV was capable of displaying both 720P and 1080i, then you might find that games--the ones that are 720P or 1080i--look better in that resulution. But, most TV's can't display both formats, it is usually one or the other, except really high end--though getting more common now--TV's.

this is going to sound stupid but how do I know what my tv can disply (I am still new to all this even after 2 years at this forum!) I have a sony kpwt500 rear projection television.

I'm pretty sure most RPTVs are 1080i.

No, some of the new ones maybe. But most of the older ones from the past few years are 720p.

Not CRT RPTV's. Plasma and LCD are typically 720P, and CRT RPTV's have been and continue to be 1080i. Of course, there is also LCD RPTV's that are 720P, and every DLP RPTV's I've seen are 720P. But more and more TVs are becoming both formats--though haven't seen CRT RPTV that can display 720P--, though still very rare and expensive.

Tonyp56 is right. My 6 year old CRT RPTV is 1080i only. If I try to send 720p my tv won't display anything because it can't handle it.

Mine will also display both 720p and 1080i. The picture doesn't look that different to me. Does that mean if you set the 360 to 720p and the TV is 1080i native, the TV is upconverting to 1080i?

How do you know it will display 720p and 1080i? As far as I can recall no CRT based RPTV displays 720p. Some will accept and convert.
Most all CRT direct view displayed 720p but not 1080i. It was and still is to costly to bother with having the ability.

I have a kp46wt520 and it takes 720p and converts to 1080i so I would gamble that most likely yours does the same.

Yes. I'm sure that's what's happening on my set. My Hitachi accepts a 720P signal and converts to 1080i. Which is probably why I can't see a difference between the two 360 resolution settings.
It's nice playing GRAW on a 57" tv

I can see a difference, I promise I am not crazy lol, just as with a computer monitor, I put it on 720 p, and the text is bigger then in 1080i, if I get a chance i will post pictures tommorow.
