Xbox 360 HD-DVD player price cut + 5 free movies

Microsoft Corp. is cutting the price of an HD DVD (high definition DVD) player it offers as an add-on to Xbox 360 game consoles and will give away five free HD DVD movies with player purchases, a sign the battle between the HD DVD and the Blu-ray Disc high definition formats is heating up.


The HD DVD player will sell for US$179 in the U.S. starting August 1, down from $199. Between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30 buyers will receive five free HD DVD movies chosen from a selection of 15, Microsoft said. The company indicated the free HD DVD movie offer was the same as that offered by Toshiba Corp., which is offering titles including Apollo 13, Seabiscuit, Constantine, Casablanca, We Were Soldiers, U-571, Blazing Saddles, and more.

The titles don't suck either..... Casablanca, Blazing Saddles, and Apollo 13 would be ones I'd buy anyway.....

I still remember the mediocre quality level of the three discs I got with my standard def DVD player 10 years ago..... US Marshalls (the sequel to the Fugitive), City of Angels, and another oneI can't even remember it was so unmemorable....

Ok so what are the features of the X-Box HD DVD compare to the PS3. Does it do wireless connection? does it have a browser?

Wireless connection is an add-on. There is currently no browser support.

I have the wireless adapter which works really well. The Marketplace is the real draw..... thousands of programs can be downloaded. Movies are rentals only, TV shows stay on the disk as long as you want them (make sure you get the 120 GB drive). I've got a bunch of comedy central programs. They also have E3 presentations (OK, Microsoft capable stuff only), ComicCon roundtable discussions (I saw ones for Smallville, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and the re-released Blade Runner movie coming soon). TONS of movie trailers, Arcade games (they just added Marathon, the precursor to Halo this week).

As for the HD DVD, it has interactivity, video commentaries in PIP, you name it. Oh, and a little thing called Halo 3 coming out next month with 4 player co-op over XBox Live.....

Best Buy made a mistake that they corrected after about 8-10 hours...they marked the price down to $149.99, not $179.99. I jumped on it, unfortunately there was some other glitch on my order and they didn't process it quickly, so now all local stores are sold out. Fortunately BB is still processing my order and is going to ship one out free of charge.

I love my HD DVD drive. I just wish the CSS would allow for 1080i/p upgrading via Component cables. But I figure if the box ever fries I'll beg for a box with an HDMI port.

Does anyone know if the 360 is even capable of a digital out signal via the normal cable bundle? I'd shell out 30 bucks for a new bundle if it does.
