Just got it yesterday and watched King Kong and boy it is clear. I am very happy with it. Animal House is next to be seen and wife has not seen it yet. thumbs up to MS on this one:up :up
The PQ on it is excellent, but the audio is a different story.
The audio coming out of my Toshiba HD DVD (which is hooked up via the analog Dolby HD jacks) sounds MUCH better then whats being fed out of the fiber link of the XBOX 360.

I have no issuies with the sound in fact it sounds better if not just as good as my panny progressive 5.1.
I guess it has to do with how you have it hooked up.
As I said HD DVD movies sound better played off the Toshiba, however with that said I am doing analog output from the Dolby HD jacks on my Toshiba into to Denon receiver which has 5.1 analog inputs.
That is not true. You can currently recieve the new formats with any decent receiver. As long as the dvd player you buy decodes the lossless format (current hd-dvd/blu-ray discs support dolby digital plus) you are capable of receiving the new formats. The first and easiest way is hook up the dvd player via HDMI to any receiver made in the last year that has atleast HDMI v.1.1. However, most people have A/V receivers without HDMI, so to overcome this your reciever would need to be equipped with mulit-channel inputs. Any decent reciever made in the last ten years has atleast 5.1 multi-channel inputs. The problem with the xbox hd-dvd drive is that it doesn't have these outputs, but with any other blu-ray or hd-dvd player all you have to do is take either 6 or 8 analog cables (depending if your reciever does 5.1 or 7.1) and go out of the DVD player multi-channel out and go into the reciever multi-channel in. As long as the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player supports the new lossless format the dvd will then decode it and send it to your A/V reciever bypassing all internal surround decoding in your reciever. However, for $200, standard dolby digital and HD picture is still pretty sweet. So if moneys an issue and you have to have HD-DVD right now, buy it and enjoy the better picture quality. Also it looks like sony is going to win the format war. I just recieved training from several venders on what was going on in the marketplace and HD-DVD has only one major studio solely supporting them and thats Universal. Sony has the backing of every other major sudio including Disney. Disney is a huge player because they own a huge percentage in the marketplace (Miramax, Pixar, etc).

I was really surprised that the sound quality from the HD XBOX drive was a equal or better... For how easy it is to set up and for the cost you can not go wrong. I know no HD 5.1 without a HDMI, but that is not that big a deal for me. I bought MI 3 last night and it looks great..I guess it has to do with how you have it hooked up.

Yes it will support DD 5.1 and sound very, very good IMHO. The HD drive does not support DTS 5.1 nor the new HD 5.1 audio format.
Right now it is hard to rent HD DVD's. BB online has them but with long waits. My local BB does not carry them CC had none to buy but Best Buy has a load. After watching HD DVD it is hard to go watch a non HD DVD.
I was a big DTS fan also.. but really all the DVD's do not have DTS anyway. The PQ is crisp, clear, sharp and the DD 5.1 sounds very, very good.

It might be hard with Blockbuster, but with Netflix it has been very easy, put the upcoming releases in your queue, when they come out they mail them to you, I have only had i title with short wait, a week later they mailed it out.
