Called retention 8/17 to cancel my service. After 40 minutes on hold I finally ended up with a retention specialist. That’s when I realized I had messed myself up because I didn’t realize going from a wireless Joey which I had for years to a wired one due to the lag would start a new two year contract. So, since I still had 6 months left of the two years I was told there would be an additional termination fee of $120+++. I finally got tired of listening to this guy listing all the reasons why I shouldn’t cancel. I finally timed out and requested a copy of my contract which he said he had submitted for but would take 3-5 days to receive via email. End of discussion.

Called Back on 8/18 after figuring out I can make up the termination penalty in just 3 months of service with YTTV.. This time I was only on hold for 25 minutes before starting the same conversation all over again which took another 45 minutes! Anyway, service was cancelled yesterday so it’s a done deal.

For the last 20 yrs we have been back and forth between DISH & DTV.. Haven’t been back to DTV since the Hopper 3 came out. It is totally superior to anything DTV has. A little over 3 years ago we bought a second home at the beach. That home has cable service incl with our HOA. The problem we ran into was using Dish Anywhere. Unless you have great internet upload speeds at the home location we found it useless. First of all the buffering made it useless in watching anything. Then you have the fact you can only have one stream at a time. Now, I’m a type of spreadsheet shopper so I lay everything out before making a decision. I could upgraded my home internet to a higher speed but that would have been ridiculous for something we only need 2-3 weeks a month usually.

So, that’s when I setup a spread sheet on cutting the cord. Ended up settling on YTTV. Has all the channels we want or need and can be watched anywhere we have an internet connection. Nearing the end of our first whole month with it and are quite happy. Getting used to a UI without channel numbers is a little challenging but it‘s not a deal killer for sure. The only other streaming service that had all the channels and features we wanted was Hulu w/LiveTV and its UI is really terrible!. I’m sure there are some differences in picture quality somewhere but with these old eyes we don’t notice it.

I wanted to thank everyone here but especially all the tech wizards that have helped me over the years. Will seem funny not reading the posts every morning but I have the site bookmarked so I can easily return when the time is right.

I don't believe replacing a Joey would require a new contract. Whoever you spoke with probably didn't know what he was talking aboujt.

Replacing same model for issues does not make a contract but changing to a different model as op did is considered an upgrade and makes a new contract unless you buy the receiver. When they had the receiver changed the agent over phone had to read all of it to them as well as the tech on site had to have them sign an agreement going over the contract. Sounds like they didn't pay attention though lol.

They should have played a recording that OP had to agree to.

A little less than 10 years ago (spring 2014) I did the exercise of "cutting the cord" from Dish. By the time I found streaming places that carried the channels we do watch on Dish the separate costs of all of them were greater than Dish. Plus there was no recorder. I stayed. Now I do subscribe to Paramount and we get Amazon Prime which give us the ability to see some programming that isn't broadcast (like Yellowstone) and some that don't come in OTA due to signal quality (like Star Trek). I'll stick with Dish for the forseeable future. Would never entertain Cox and the jury is still out on DirecTV.

Like just about every thread this one veered OT. It doesn’t matter one way or another if they read me the details on the Joey. I was just stating what happened when I called. I had been with DISH for many years and a member of this forum for that period. I knew there would be a termination fee, I just forgot about it. The whole point of the first post was to lay out for others what goes on when terminating. But more importantly, to thank all 5he tech people that has helped me over 5he years. If money didn’t matter I would have stayed with DISH. Unfortunately being a senior disabled veteran, money does matter. As a side note, been 8 days now and still no return box!

We cancelled back in December. I called about a week before the contract was up to see what deals they had. I was told to call back closer to the end. So three days before the end of the contract I called. Wouldn't give me any deals. Customer for 25 years, had a 612 and 211, they wanted an extra $10/month. I told them I want to cancel at the end of the contract. After trying to keep me, CSR finally said "Ok, we'll cancel you effective today". I told him no, I'm paid through the end of the contract, I want the days I paid for. Petty? Yes, but it's the principle of the thing.

Settled on Hulu w/Live because it was slightly cheaper than YTTV. I agree the GUI leaves a LOT to be desired. I still check in here every so often.

I understand the frustration. I've renewed contract every couple of years for quite a while now. One thing I learned the first time I renewed. Until your contract is actually expired, the system won't offer you much in the way of new contract discounts.

So, now I just wait a couple of days after the contract is up, call in and they always have some pretty good offers. I usually just opt for the Existing Customer 2 year. One time I did take the one year contract because it was so lucrative at the time.

IMO, and it's worth what you're paying for it, that's a poor way to set up the programming. So they've lost a long term customer over it, but not a high paying one.
