Windows 7 from XP Question / Issue

Windows 7 install went fine and the program seems to run very well. However, I like to play a specific game online and through my LAN (Age of Kings - Conquerors Expansion). It's a Microsoft / Ensemble Studios game and while the game itself works fine over the internet, I can't get it to work through my LAN and play against someone on another computer hooked up to my router. The same game works fine if both computers are running XP. It's as if the Win 7 machine has a firewall running (even though I've turned off both the Windows firewall and the Kapersky firewall). Am I missing something in Windows 7 that needs to be turned off? Or are the TCP / IP settings compatible? Anyone with some knowledge that can help would be greatly appreciated. I'm no computer expert but I can hold my own.

Windows 7 uses something called a homegroup. I don't know much about it and maybe some else here can assist further. You can search for homegroup and see what it takes to get an XP machine to work. I use Windows 7 RC on a computer too, but have not had time to figure it out yet.

Edit: After looking little bit, I don't think XP can join a homegroup. Maybe use Windows 7 without the homegroup if that is possible.

I havn't tried to interact a win 7 computer with XP, but which computer is the host of the game? If it is the win 7 machine, have you tried making the XP machine host the game and the Win 7 machine join that one?

I'm not sure about Win7, but my experience with Vista. I wanted to
use a printer connected to my Vista machine on an XP computer, both
networked together for internet purposes. The XP machine could not
see the printer on the Vista machine.

Turns out Vista's default workgroup name is "WORKGROUP" whereas
XP's default workgroup name is "MSHOME". I went into the XP machine
and changed the workgroup name to "WORKGROUP" also. The printer
then showed up.

If I remember right in XP it's:
Right click on: My Computer
Click on: Properties
Click on: System Properties
Then change the workgroup name to: WORKGROUP

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've tried turning off homegroup on the Win 7 machine all to no avail. I've made sure that the proper ports are open on my router and assigned to the correct internal IP address (all was ok, nothing changed since it worked with XP). I double checked all firewalls turned off. Just at a loss now. Will keep trying to work with it.

Unfortunately even when I was running XP I had to make sure 2 individual and 1 set of ports was open on my router (and make sure the IP address my machine was assigned didn't change as I hate setting up static IP's)

I run them in compatibility mode as XP and all applications install and run just fine with Windows 7

Only one I've run into that won't install even in compatibility mode is Slingplayer...tried a week ago with the latest one on their site. Haven't tried the older 1.5 version yet. No biggie though as I don't use my Slingplayer app at home since I'm at home anyways. As long as the one on my phone works I'm good to go.

I'm running SlingPlayer 2.0.1.481 on Win7 x64 here at the office and an older 1.x at home, both work fine.

Have you tried any 16 bit programs? These won't run in Vista 64. Not sure about Vista 32. I'm in the process now of installing a clean install of win 7 64 bit on my Dell M1210 using a new hard drive. Should be interesting! I have my XP drive untouched ready to plug in if win 7 is too difficult. I'll need to reinstall all of my applications since there is no upgrade process from xp32 to win7 64bit.
