Hi:
Despite reading many reports of people losing their ability to receive free OTA TV broadcasts after they cancel their VOOM satellite service I have received the email below from VOOM. Is this now true?
Thanks,
Joseph

Thank you for choosing VOOM - HDTV Delivered!

Regarding your request to cancel service and keep the ota channels, you will be
able to keep using the receiver for this purpose to receive the local channels.
As far as the program guide for the local channels, we are not obligated to
provide this after you cancel the service. We would be happy to welcome you back
as a customer when we do have that dvr available, to offer you all the best hd
programming that we offer.

Thank you for choosing VOOM - the leader in High Definition programming!

John just unplug the satellite cable from the back of your VOOM box.

Now try watching local OTA.

Does it work? If yes then there is your answer. :D

Scott:
The post below this one said that the box checks for authorization every two weeks and will shut itself down if it is not authorized. Is that true?

How will we know ahead of time if VOOM is going to shut down all the boxes if they shut down the service?

The Dish box, even when not authorized, can receive OTA as long as the box remains connected to the satellite dish so that is the opposite of what you are saying about the VOOM box. Also, previous reports from VOOM CSR's and CSR supervisors indicate that th VOOM box will not receive OTA after the box is de-authorized - which is the opposite of what the latest email from VOOM says. Maybe someone from VOOM could comment with a definitve answer - like Wilt.

Re: [VOOM] Wilt - Could you please comment on OTA?

A definitive answer would be great but so far it has been very elusive.

As I have mentioned several times by now, I had a box unplugged from the sat link for 45 days that was still happily receiving OTA. No guide data of course. Just make sure to unplug the sat line prior to cancelling so that your card does not get the shutdown signal.

What if ....

Of course best case scenario is that Voom is doing the DMA upgrade for long term service for their subs.

But what if they are preparing a going away gift of the Super DMA and permanent authorization for OTA.

I have read that it would be more expensive to pick them up.
The note from Voom in this thread seems to confirm ongoing OTA use.
Continuing to work on DMA software is confusing if the Doomsayers are correct.

Again I want Voom to succeed, just a what if...

What is DMA?

DMA stands for Designated Market Area. Each DMA has its own channel map which specifies which OTA channels you get program listings for, based on which DMA your zip-code belongs to. The way it was originally implemented, DMAs did not overlap, so if you were in Hartford, CT, you were not able to see PG listings for NYC stations and vice versa.

What is Super-DMA?

The new Super-DMA maps overlap. In addition to channels in their home DMAs, they include some (but not all) channels from the neighboring DMAs. For example, the new Hartford Super-DMA map includes NYC stations.

Best bet is go to Satelliteguys.us for good information.

Rhetorical question: Why don't more Yahoo members monitor Satellite Guys?

Re: [VOOM] Re: Wilt - Could you please comment on OTA?

But if the guide is gone and iff VOOM is done, then DMA is not what I want
or need. I just want software that allows me to scan locals, store them,
and modify them later if new channels are added or the UHF revert to VHF in
2007. I think you need at least 6.? to do that and have VOOM lift the
dreaded "not authorized" screen for OTA.

Doesn't the card belong to VOOM even on purchased receivers?

Someone else mentioned that the box must be continually "reactivated" or it shuts itself down - maybe your box has older firmware and that is why it continues to work for OTA.

As others have said - it sure would be nice to get a definitive answer from VOOM but I guess that $800 plus $80 per month doesn't buy that kind of customer service.

Dish CSR's answered the same question about their receiver correctly on the first call!!

What's "Satellite Guys?"? Heh, heh.

For those of you on here who don't know make sure to search=20
for "satelliteguys.us".

Still watching HDTV under clear (a freeze promised) Seattle skies,Gill
