Will the HWS ever get the CUI?

Jsheridan, do you have any idea if this will be a "forced update" or will we have an option as to install it or not if we're happy the way things are now?
It's very, very unlikely that Dish will develop, or continue to develop, (2) software versions for Hoppers w/ Sling

Remember, an update for the Carbon interface a couple of months ago added the "Classic" appearance. My money says when they push the interface to all receivers, they will default to the "Classic" interface so that the change isn't too drastic for some people.

I just heard that the new UI will be 'available' to all Hoppers and HWS's on September 1.
Initially, the Carbon interface was to be applied to the entire Hopper "family", from original Joeys and Hoppers up to the Hopper 3, 4K, and so on. A few months ago, Vivek said they had to change plans and wouldn't be making it available for the original Hopper because the hardware simply wasn't capable enough.

As far as making it "available", that sounds like customers will be given the option to install it and later, it will be forced.

From what I'm told it will be available for the original Hopper as well as the HWS. Things have changed. :)

And I don't get the exact meaning of the term 'available' either, but Scott said in another post that it will be forced so that's probably what's going to happen.

This will be a mistake on Dish's part (but I also understand why they want to do this). I had the original Hopper and now have a Hopper w/Sling. I could truly feel a difference in performance - the HWS is definitely faster. Now, with the Carbon UI, the HWS does just fine but some parts feel slower now. Not enough to be a bad experience at all, mind you, but it's definitely noticeable. They want to put this same interface on a clearly older and slower piece of hardware ? It won't be enjoyable.

I also have a Joey 1 and it has to run the Carbon interface since it's "server" is running Carbon .... and it really sucks. It is terrible on performance. It is so bad that I was going to BUY my own Joey 2 but Dish, including DIRT, said they will not activate it if I bought one (!!). Reason I looked at buying one is because I asked how to replace or swap it for a Joey 2. That's when I was told they can't swap one because it's not compatible.

I also have a Joey 1

My condolences.

Side thought...Couldn't you get a 4K Joey for faster experience, then? It would get around the compatibility as their system would know you'd have the new UI, because of the 4K Joey.

Originally, Dish had said that they were going to force the CUI update to the older receivers in March (that was when I posted the "please do not force the CUI interface on us until the major problems are solved" thread). I am very happy that 6 months has gone by without Dish releasing the new interface. I won't mind if Dish waits even longer to solve the other OTA issues and other problems that have been reported.

Can you imagine the number of phone calls and ticked-off customers that would have resulted from releasing the CUI interface to the older receivers last March! Let's face it, most Dish customers with the older Hoppers do not even know that the new CUI interface exists. Even if the new CUI interface works perfectly, there are still going to be a lot of folks calling Dish complaining about missing functions or asking how to do things with the new interface.

At this point, I wonder if Dish would be better off leaving the older Hoppers as they are and just use the new interface with the new Hoppers. I know that in the long run it would be easier for Dish to support only one interface for all Hoppers, but they have to also consider customer reaction to a totally new interface when they are comfortable with their current interface.

Honestly my hws doesn't seem to have issues one the carbon ui. It did in the beginning but as of the past few months it's worked completely fine *knock on wood*

Does it have 1/4, 1/15 and 4X FF speeds?

I vote for delivery by floppy disc.

8 inch.

Yup...say good bye to 4X.

I believe the slowmo 1/4 & 1/15 are still there. Don't use the slowmo stuff very often.

FWIW I have an HWS and I tried the CUI in the early days and it was horrible. I lost contact with my joeys among other things. But I was convinced by others to try the current beta and it works well for me. No issues with OTA recording or the other horror stories I hear from H3 users so I suspect that it is not the software that has an issue.

Having said that more tuners would be nice. Although 16 does seem to be overkill.

How long does it take to format an EHD?
