I currently have Insight Cable. The DVR's they use have to be put in standby mode in order to turn on closed captioning. How stupid is that? This means I can't do it while a recording is in progress or I will lose some of the recording.

How does it work with Dish DVR's. Can you turn it off and on like you can on TV's. This has become a real problem for me since I'm almost totally deaf. I am going to have to go to satellite if it works any better for CC.

I am not really sure what kind of problems your having with your DVR when it comes to close captioning as most of my recording playback with CC enabled, the only ones that dont are like old shows and movies ,but even alot of them are available in CC.Go into the section of the DVR(I am sure others can tell you how,as I am not sure how to access either)also make sure your TV is enabled for CC as if for some reason DVR wont decode TV might.
I am partially Deaf and without CC on my TV I would go nuts.

You can change the closed caption any time without affecting recordings (captions are not part of the picture) except if you are recording TV1 to say a DVD's s-video where it would be part of the image.

On a 622/722... go to menu-8-7, I then suggest for TV1:
under 1 turn it on
under 2 Proportional w/o serifs, standard
under 3 Background=N/A Foreground=Yellow Edge=Black
(white or black fg can get lost and an outline help there, too)
under 4 Edge Style=Uniform or other
under 5 Captioning Service=1 (must be)
under 6 Background=Transparent Foreground=Solid (you see more of the picture)

But make your own choices--some will be bad but some will please you more.
You have your TV's choices on TV2--generally a black background with white letters.

I guess I phrased the question poorly

I just want to be able to turn captioning on while watching a program while another program is being recorded, without having to stop the program being recorded. On my cable company DVR's I have to put them in a standby mode to access the closed captioning on/off. When I do this it stops recording and I miss part of the program.

CC for TV2 and TV1 on RF are controlled by your TV and its remote.

CC for TV1 on other outputs is controlled by the Dish set-top box.
"Quick" change is menu-8-7-1-left-click-right-click-view.
This sequence is a toggle on to off and vv.

This uses the settings given in the other sub-menus, which should be set at least once.

Yes, you can turn CC on or off at anytime you want without affecting anything currently recording.

yes, you can record 2-3 shows at once, watch something else recorded previously on one tv,something else also recorded previously on another tv, transfer shows to external hdd and ,wait for it,....change cc on/off whenever you want.

the only reason to ever go to standby is to save the hdd a little.

I just checked - I watched a bit of tv, turned cc on, and rewinded to a previous spot I had already watched and cc came on for those parts.

Nice to know you can record it and not worry about cc being on, it's really always there.

It is a whole lot more button clicks than it should be but yes you can turn it on without putting your DVR into standby.
