I have DirecTV and I'd like to know if I upgrade to a HD box will the SD channels still maintain there 4:3 ratio?

Or will they get stretched out and distort in some way?

Thanks for your help!

In the "Menu" , there is a HDTV section and you can chose between TV Ratio, Standard 4:3 or WideScreen 16:9.

And to add to what the poster above stated, the ratio settings will only affect the SD channels. The HD channels will always broadcast as they are sent

Also, IF your using this HD recvr on a SD set you can also go into the menu and set it so the SD channels ONLY show up in the guide, or HD only depending on what you need.

That would make tuning simpler but I find that HD channels look fine on an SD TV. Most are pillar boxed slightly some are letter boxed and some are postage stamped but they all look good. To the OP try it and see what you like.

I find that the HD channels typically look much sharper even on a SD TV. I use the format key pretty often to switch between letterbox for 16:9 programs and crop for 4:3 programs.
