WILL 811 OTA function without Sat Signal

a funny thing happened to me yesterday. i needed to move an 811 into a larger rooom for the superbowl and as i was checking to make sure i was getting a good signal from the silver sensor indoor antenna i pulled the satellite feed out of the 811 and the antenna still worked.
of course after i unplugged the receiver and plugged it back in again it didnt work and i had to put the satellite feed back in.
