Why would I connect VIP222k to ethernet?

Hi everyone,

I noticed that the VIP222k has also an ethernet port in the back. While I've been using my two VIP222k receivers for the pat few years without connecting any of them to my network (or to the Internet), I was wondering what would be the advantages of attaching an ethernet cable to the receiver.

I've connected one of the receivers to the network and it now has an IP address and can connect to the Internet....So what? What does that do for me or how can I better use the receiver if it is connected to the network or the Internet?

Would welcome anyone's advice/recommendation/opinion. Thanks

Order Pay Per View movies with the remote, it also sends STB (set top box) health to dish. This way if there is a problem developing with the receiver, most times Dish will know it before you and will be able to fix it or replace it before it totally croaks. You can also pay your bill through your receiver with a cc.

Total bulls,,,

Not for one second do I think that dish logs STBH information or if they do, use it in any sort of way

I don't know if that's true or not, but this is what a Dish tech replied to me on another forum:

We don't require, but strongly recommend connecting receivers. We can't troubleshoot it using the connection (meaning we can't take control of the receiver), but the receiver does send us updates regarding the overall health of your system (which can tell us receiver failure and things), along with some settings that can help us in the troubleshooting process. __________________

I hope that this is true, otherwise I will not waste a network connection on the receiver.

WRONG!!

Not only do they collect it, but they actually send folks out if they see a problem. If you search for LNB drift on this site, you will find many instances of this happening.

umm when i had my vip 211 i once got a call from dish pointing out an issue that i wasn't aware about. so it must work. if not whats the other way they could've found out i was having an issue ?

Don't forget that more and more people are getting rid of their land lines but almost everyone has internet. If people like to rent movies from the receiver they need either a phone line or ethernet cable connected.

Being a tech for 2 years, I never went to a house where a customer said "you called me about this problem..."

I've said it many times on here. There are far to many issues and far to many customers not notified for issues for me to believe in this "connectivity for STBH" info being used to resolve issues before they arise.

I also think that if the STBH information was collected regularly and stored, if a customer called, the CSR should be able to tap into the rcvr via real time and check it out -That OR they should be able to go into a customers account and look at recent history/stbh information.

Just my feelings on it, thats all.

wonder if a DiRT member might chime in here??

In a round-a-bout way, we already did......

About 7 or 8 months ago I had about 3 weeks where work orders were created by Dr. Dish where the customer had no Idea a service call was created.

Infact, i precalled a customer and they were in disneyland. And nobody waschouse sitting.

So somehow a work order was created for low signal with nobody calling in to create the service call. I can only assume the reciever called out to report the problem.
