Why is this man not in the "Hall of Fame?"

It's an old phrase that's not used much anymore. When a convict was released from prison, no matter the crime, he had "paid his dept to society."

i underatand it. it is just that the prison time he served was for something other than waht got him banned. taht was what confused me. but that si my problem.

Ok ....
18 years later, What does he have to do in your mind to be able to be voted in ?
He's not even allowed to be voted in if everyone said OK it's been long enough, he's still banned for some reason.
I think the guy would be a great hitting coach if he wanted to be.

On the field he did it the way it was suppose to be done !

Jimbo why is it that when I describe a mindsset you assume that I share that viewpoint? All I said was that I did not understand how he paid his debt to society---and I made it clear that I was one the confused on that point.

BTW he IS allowed to be voted in by the veteran's committeee.

well, you quoted it, so I thought that was your side of it.

I didn't know the Vet. Committe could vote for someone that is banned .

I don't think they can. Nobody that has been permanently suspended can be inducted into the Hall of Fame. There are others on this list besides Rose. Shoeless Joe Jackson is another that is on the banned list and is not capable of being voted into the Hall of Fame.

Thats the List, thats it, thats the list !

As far as I know, there are no others other than Rose and Jackson ...

There are more. Don't forget that there were 8 players banned for the White Sox in 1920. Rose and Jackson are just the most known of all the players.

But Jackson was part of the Chi Sox if I remember correctly from the books I use to read. There fore I counted them as part of the Jackson group.
How many of them were headed to the HOF ?
Are there any others ?

edit:
Boy I sure left the Jack Morris talk, OK, Back to our regularly sponsored thread.

It still somewhat fits because some of the banned players should be part of the Hall of Fame if they wouldn't have been so stupid.

As far as I am concerened he admitted his guilt and that's good enough.

He didn't admit his guilt or apologize until there was financial gain to be made (his book). He gambled on baseball, and I don't care if it was when he was a manager or a player. I don't believe for a moment that he wasn't gambling on baseball when he was a player. He broke the rules, plain and simple. Sorry Pete , no HOF for you. Great player, but apparently sh*t-for-brains.

Some of these people have been banned and then reinstated.

like Willie Mays for instance. But that shows you how seriosuly the sport has always taken any association with gambling.

They can. if you go to rose's wikipedia article you will find links to the appropriate documetns. he could be voted in now but was not even listed on the ballot for the committee this year.

BTW the ban on being voted in to the Hall was unofficial only until the Rose situation. It should also be noted that at the time of the origianl ban Rose admitted that the commissioner had a factual basis for the suspension. Not quite an admission but what else can you say about it.

Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were both banned from baseball when they took employment as casino "greeters". They both quit those jobs as soon as they realized they were banned from baseball. Yes, MLB does take gambling serious.
