Why is it if I install my directv myself I have to pay for all the equipment but if an installer does it, it doesn't cost me a dime?

I'll gladly pay for equipment, as long as a D* installer doesn't come within 100 yards of my house! Too many horror stories!

Good question though!

Thats how they sucker you into a lease agreement. Pay an arm and a leg to own it ,or give me your arm and leg for 2years.They would rather you commit.

In exchange for free equipment and install you agree to 1 or 2 year commitment to programming. That simple really.

You will still incur a commitment with getting your own receivers though since they are leased no matter where you "buy" them.

You can still buy them outright from Directv. and own them. Much higher cost.

HR20-700 approx $ 800.
How many are going to bite on that one ?
Thats how the HR10-250 originally started out ( $ 1000) then slowly dropped in price, I believe that this is the reason D* went with the lease program, so they would have a way to get the units into homes.

I know for a fact that I would have only one if that, if they were sold outright.

They are sold outright . Call and ask if you don't believe me. If you want no commitment this is the only way you can.

Jimbo is agreeing with you. He is making the comment on how much they cost.

Exactly. He is saying, and I feel the same way, that if the only option was to pay $750-$800 he may not even have 1 of them. Same here, I don't have $800 just laying around. $199 I can handle a lot easier. And now you can get them even cheaper down to free.

Cost is the #1 reason I never got the HR10 in the first place. And once the price started coming down I knew about MPEG4 and so I refused to buy something that wouldn't be the future.

Sorry Jimbo, I read your last line it just sounded Funny.I know what your saying . IF you mean they didn't have a lease option.

I guess my last line did look kinda funny. What I was trying to say was what others said, if I had to pay the $ 800 for each of them, I may or may not own one now ... I currently have 2 and possibly a third soon, all leased of course.

I'm debating on the third because I really don't know if I want to put one in the bedroom, I don't want to have to hear the HD running, I don't know how noisy it is curerently because mine is in the entertainment center.
My other option will be the H20-100 or 600, not sure.

To a large extent, the are trying to discourage self-installs as well as receiver ownership. Is it working?

I don't mind leasing because they are always comming out with new equipment anyway. I got another HR20 comming to replace my H20-600 on september 1 st.D* gave me a really good lease deal for upgrading my service back. $49.99 for the receiver and $5 off for the next 6 months plus no additional time on my contract. Which still has 18 months anyhow. I'm not sure if I'm Going to keep it for my daughters room or let them take it. I'm really not that impressed with my H20. Seem to have alot of problems. Maybe the 100 would be better. It seems to have more updates avail.,then the 600.IMO.

Sure it is ... you pretty much cannot sign up as a new sub without them doing the install ... reason being, they probably want to be responsible for the signal strengh, to cut back on having to go out and do what they are trained to do in the first place.
That said, not all installers do the same fine install and pointing that my installer did on my AT-9.

As for rec's I think the lease program is working too, as I mentioned earlier, I would never pay $ 800 a piece for a HR DVR, but thanks to the lease program I own two of them (lease, that is )

Have you noticed that the -100 is getting the updates and not the -600's ( I don't pay attention because I don't have one yet.)
I wonder if they are sending out only -100's now ? Could this be the reason ?

Should I be looking for a -100 over a -600 when it comes time to update my H10

I only noticed that the 100 just has a CE last weekend and now one this weekend. the 600 hasn't gotten one in over a month.

And it could be similar to the HR20. The 700 gets all the CEs and usually once it goes national or very close the 100 gets a CE just to make sure. Reason is there are so many more 700s out there.

H20's could be the same where there are a lot more 100s out there. The 600s will certainly be updated but there may not be enough to warrant the CE work.

When the time comes I'd look to getting the H21 instead of an H20 unless you need OTA (the H21 doesn't have OTA tuners). No word on when the H21 will be out but I'd bet less then 6 months since it's in public testing already.

Well that narrows it down, I definatley need OTA , I'm actually suprised that D* is not putting an OTA into the new rec.
First they took away the analog tuner, now they take away the OTA tuner, I sure hope this isn't the way it's going to be in the future.
I perfer to use my OTA set up over the sat locals, I'm sure this is a way to push more money thier way for locals, but I would still like to have the option, there are still a lot of areas not serviced by D* locally.
Currently D* has NO local HD in the NW Ohio area without going to Detroit and they won't let me have the Detroit market. So what are you to do ?

You may want to get the 100 if possible. The 600 has OTA but mine has problems when you scroll down the favorite list to add or delete. Every time I would use the channel down button to scroll down the channels faster, for some reason it makes the receiver restart,Also the 600 seems to reboot when ever it feels like it. It NEEDS UPDATE BAD!.I did hear there may be a national release for the 600 soon. I hope before the first of September, that when I decide if it stays of goes.
