Anyone notice WhiteSprings is putting out a booming signal today? About 87-88 on the Coolsat 5000, normally I barely get 62-63 with the 10 footer and CK1.

Signal is back down to 63%. Oh well, it doesn't seem to make any difference, at 63 it is just as stable as 87%.
Was the picture quality still lousy at the higher readings? Haven't been too motivated to seek out WhiteSprings.
It's an entertaining channel, worthy of a spot in my channel list. I just don't use it as demo material on my HD monitor

Hahahaha, that's funny. I do wonder how much more money it costs to broadcast a good picture vs. a bad one.
I'm presuming that if you soften edges, you can get a smaller file size. I asked to see and got to watch one of the two sat network's standard def locals at Radio Shack the other day, and was appalled by the picture; yikes, made me appreciate RTN and their pixelated but sharper images.
I wonder what the quality is of their original.
In one movie, I swear I saw a shadow of a person walking in front of the camera, as if it was taped at a movie theater. LOL
That's what I always assumed, that the source material they were working with was not the greatest quality.
But hey, they make up for the poor video quality with incredibly loud, distorted audio!
We don't watch it very often but it's a pretty cool channel....and the price is nice.
I think we should all petition Dish Network to add White Springs TV because it's one of my biggest reasons for wanting to sign up for an FTA system. I am sure that because few have heard of it, they will never take it seriously. I just don't have the money to get an FTA system going right now.

But, when I did watch it, from time to time ya did see something that looked pretty clear.
I won't defend their micro-bandwidth (how much could THAT cost?), but I really think the major component in their crappy-looking picture, is the source material.
If you wanted to produce a show about satellites, I'll bet you could shoot 20 minutes on VHS, and for about $100, they'd air it ! -

Their signal can be picked up on a paperclip and a foil gum wrapper, so you have no excuse.

I can handle the pink flamingos in the neighbor's yard, but could never handle it when someone would lend me a tape "I just had to see" and it was recorded in 6 hour mode.
By the way, I have an old S-VHS deck that I now use to record FTA SD stuff, finally I have a source that benefits from that technology (that never caught on). It's what VHS should have been...
White Springs programming almost solely comes from Alpha Video, a DVD distributor.

You can usually rent most of these titles via Netflix. They sell their DVD's via OLDIES.com . If you've ever seen the quality of these DVD's, you would understand why White Springs looks like it does. They are probably just re-broadcasting the DVD's.

Just because a film is "old" doesn't mean that it cannot look good. TCM's video quality is top notch. It's all in the source material. There are movies from the 30's and 40's being released on Blu-ray and they look incredible. Obviously, White Springs cannot afford to obtain good source material (see my post above). I've seen movies that were broadcast on WS also broadcast on TCM, and the PQ difference was night and day. TCM uses better prints. Simply put, TCM can afford it, WS cannot.
