Which dual receiver would you BUY...

One last comment. This all REALLY centers around whether or NOT you are REALLY going to get and HDTV withing the next 6 months. If that is your plan, then plan ahead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, the next month or so you will probably find the best deals of the year, as new models start coming out next month.

Thanks for the heads up!!! I've been using DishNow & feeding 2 TV's off a 301 ..but only 1 station on both sets without locals (they are not available on prepaid).

Hard to believe an HD feed into an SD set is a "better" picture??

It's a vacation rental place & thought the 6 mo. free HD would be a nice bonus for renters this Summer, but did not expect an extra cost after that. Just trying to get the most for the least. Looks like their FreeForAll would be the best IF I go with E*. Buy a receiver (?) & get free locals for 12 mo., 3 mo. movie channels & Cinemax .01 for 1 year w/o contract.

You might want to consider having dishes installed both at your home and at your vacation house and just move the receiver back and forth between the two as you journey.

Enjoy Dish Network programming wherever you are.

You can even call dish and let them know you are going to your vacation house - since they are in the same DMA, there is no real need.

It is a much better picture to have the HD signal fed into an SD set. I've got one in my bedroom and I can't stand the SD channels compared to the HD channels - even though it's a standard TV.

BTW, ViP622 receiver is discontinued now. It was replaced by the ViP612 (which only supports one TV).

The ViP722 will support two TVs (one HD TV and one SD TV) and it has more DVR capacity than the 622.

Whoops, there you go, can't talk about acct stacking. Your using it between the 2 places is a gray area with Dish but allowing renters to use it, totally stacking. Keep that under your hat from Dish if you do it that way. BE CAREFUL!!

How is that Account Stacking? I don't use between two place, no satellite at home only cable. One receiver, one remote, so TV in one room has to watch same channel in other room. Just split the output to two locations.

Wide open line of sight on the lake. Looked a little at FTA, still a little confusing for a newbie & need reliability for renters.

IF you're talking about "other" methods...please elaborate!!

My mistake. I misunderstood your posts thinking you had Dish at your primary residence and didn't catch the gist of post #7. Please accept my deepest heartfelt apology.;)

bjack56,

If you are going to have renters, than I would think the Dish NOW!/YA! prepaid system would make the most sense. It is a "pay now/eat later" sort of deal, that keeps you out of any real messes with the satellite company or your renters.

****NO HD/PPV/VOD/LOCAL SPORTS NETWORKS WHICH INCLUDE ALL FSN'S, NESN/MSG/YES/ETC... OR LOCAL CHANNELS, easily corrected with a antenna if feasible(NBC/CBS/ABC/PBS/ETC...) AVAILABLE WITH DISH NOW! PREPAID. JUST TO BE CLEAR*******

You want to watch something, pay for it up front. I don't know how far you are from the TV towers to that lake, but you could attach a really good outdoor antenna/rotor for those people who only care about local channels(if this is even feasible).

But the prepaid system, even getting 2 prepaid DP301 boxes for connection to a Dish 500, would still be cheaper/safer for you in the long run. Even if you wanted to order "double" the same programming on two different boxes(you can ALWAYS use the same GreenDot MoneyPak for this), so the people in each room can watch different channels, it would still be cheaper.

I say go that route. Here are the costs for the daily charge, using the latest price increases, on English programming:

Dish Family: $.67 cents/day
Dish Classic Bronze 100: $1.17/day
Dish Classic Silver 200: $1.60/day
Dish Classic Gold 250: $1.93/day
HBO: $.57 cents/day
Showtime/Cinemax/Starz: $.43 cents/day
Porn/Adult: $.83 cents/day

Thanks Steelersrule for the reply & breakdown of prices.

Before this thread, I did not know there was a difference between RS DishNow card & the GreenDot. Unless I still don't understand, the GreenDot is the ONLY one that will let you do individual days. Just got my 1st one & works great. With the DishNow card I was having to rent programing wether I had renter or not. If I went for a weekend had no TV if expired or had to do the whole $40.

Miss having locals, don't understand why they can't be available too? Association does not allow an outdoor aerial. Have one in attic, but reception poor with the roofing obstruction. Would have to get a digital box too since bothe TV's are not digital.

Does the 301 act as a digital box for OTA or just pass through?

Your association must allow you to install an antenna per federal ruling. Whether you want to fight for it(or look at it) or not is the question but they cannot disallow it. Someone here has posted the FCC's actual rule or a link to it but I can't remember where. It's likely in the HD OTA forum here:

The GreenDot MoneyPak is the one to use, period, IMHO(In My Humbled Opinion). The reason being that you can order invidual days of programming, and if there is ever a problem, Greendot will refund whatever money you have left on the card, plus the service charge you paid where/when you got it.($4.64 at WalMart). I have done this before, with no problems from the GDMP(Green Dot Money Pak) people at all. Very easy.

With the $40 prepaid card, you must use that amount, in it's entirety, on the programming you are buying. Can't pick and choose, like with the GDMP. So if have a $40 gift card, and order, let's say, Classic Gold 250, you would get 21 days of AT250, and nothing else.

With the GDMP, you can pick and choose. If someone is renting for 5 days, they can pick and choose 5 days of AT250, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz for like $19 off of the GDMP for 5 days worth of programming from all of the above(this is just an example of course). Out of a $20 GDMP($20 minimum load up to $1,100 Maximum load + at least a $4.64 service charge). Then they can save/use the rest next time they come, and have another GDMP loaded with more money. So on, and so forth.

Since Dish has NO IDEA where the box is located, and who in the heck you are(on initial activation, all you give is a zip code, and that is it. No name, No Credit Card, No Social Security #, etc...) they can't send the locals, or the local RSN's for that matter due to FCC Rules and Regulations.

I think it is baloney too, but those are the rules. I still have never read a reasonable reason as to "why?" the FCC fears/disallows this(can't watch distant Networks out of NYC or distant RSN's out of, say, Phoenix, while living in Pittsburgh. Makes no sense to me. What are they afraid of?), other than the fact that they can :)

And, NO, the DP301 is not a digital converter for ATSC digital(Over the Air with an Antenna), or Clear QAM digital(Cable TV). It will accept analog for the time being, but not much longer since they will all be gone(unless moved back, again!!!) by 6/12/09.

So you will either have to get newer TV's(LCD TV's are getting so cheap right now, and have everything built into them. Especially cheap on the 26" and below. Even the 32" are becoming cheap), or get the converter boxes.

The TV's are surely not even close to as cheap as the digital converter boxes. Especially after the $40 goverment coupon.

622 problem?
