Everywhere I go around town I see Directv vans out repairing peoples downed dishes from hurricane Wilma. I have not seen a single Dishnetwork van. I am basically up and running but I would think that it is kind of embarrassing for Dishnetwork. I do have an appointment on the 10th for them to fix my dishes since what I had up there was torn down and I just found some damaged parts that got it working temporarily, I hope they show up for the appointment.

John I can tell you that dish does have alot of technicians in florida right now and that one of the dns facilities has shut down to take every tech, manager, dispatcher, and warehouse person to help in the relief work. By tuesday there will be 25 or so people from my facility in florida as well. Keep these factors in mind, (1) we are still servicing customers that were devistated from katrina and rita and we are still seeing damage from dennis and even from last year where people are finally starting to get back into theyr homes. (2) Even though you may be seeing directv vans in your area it doesnt mean that 50 miles up the road that the people there are seeing any directv vans coming down theyr block. (3) Repairing systems on homes that have no power presents a problem but we are dealing with it the best we can as are any other service personel that are doing what we do.

One last thing I want everyone here to know, last month one of our technicians from jersey died in a head on collision while doing this very work out in texas, the tech in question had been with dish for just over a year and didnt hesitate to help out with the task of working long hours in rough conditions in less than ideal conditions. We are all taking the same risk's that anyone living in these area's are and then some and we will do our best to get to you as quickly as possible.

Trust me Van I understand that Dishnetwork has their hands full and are probably just in different areas than I am in. It is much appreciated that you guys come down to messes like this and dangerous situations to fix the stuff for us. I was just merely surprised that I hadn't seen any E* trucks.

BTW I got my power turned back on finally yesterday. It was a crew from London, Ont that did it. Seeing all these people coming from all over the country and even Canada has seriously brought a tear or two to my eye.

Thanks to you Van and all the techs like you helping out in getting all these communities back to normal in every aspect. We really appreciate it.

Directv has made all there Home Service Providers have 80% of there workers be on a hourly rate and drive company owned vehicles where Dish network hasn't. Thats probably the biggest reason why you see alot of Directv vans out where you live. Dish network is in the area to, I promise, but probably alot of them are driving there own personal vehicles.

They are all here in Mandeville La doing new installs. We are now 9 weeks since Katrina, and most of Charter Cable is still out. I heard an estimate of 200 - 300 new installs per day in our community of former cable customers.......

There is either a Dish or Direct Van on every other corner of the main Hwy (US 190) through our town. They each typically have a line of 4-5 people at them signing up for sattelite service during evening drive time......

I had an appointment for OCT. 27th for a service call. This was made a week before Wilma. The day before they called and said they can't come until the 17th. My 61.5 dish fell. The service call was unrelated to storm damages but now I have storm damages. What I don't understand is why did I get bumped 3 weeks later when I already had an appointment.

Not that I'm in the area, but out here in AZ, I've only ever seen one DISH van. But I personally know several businesses that are DISH installers, but do not display DISH logos. One has unmarked private vehicles, and one is a security company.

I can tell you some of the reasons why people get bumped.

(1) Work loads can be more than an installer can handle given that its not uncommon for a tech to roll out with 10 - 15 service calls a day just to repair service. In some instances a tech may not be able to finish the last 2 -3 service calls due to the following reason's.

(2) Curfew's are in place in some locations and this also applies to us so if there is a dusk to dawn curfew we have to abide by it to.

(3) Weather, heavy rain makes it incredibly hard to repair a system and not allow water into vital connections.

(4) Many streets dont have road signs after a hurricane and many homes also loose theyr address numbers on the house and at the mailbox or even the mailbox.

(5) Its not always possible to contact a customer by phone when theres no power, cell phones are not always consistant as towers may be damaged or taken down repeatedly for repairs.

(6) Over routing a region happens occasionaly and can result in more routes than techs for the area, all that can be done is reschedule wich can be a problem when number 5 is at issue.

(7) Not everyone is good with maps and when your in an area you do not know that makes it much harder.

So aside from the reasons here there are a few more such as fatigue and unfortunately less than persistant techs wich will get themselves weeded out very quickly I can promise you. There were some techs that were removed from employment with Dish just before I arived in the pensacola and mobile region for various reasons, we are watched very closely on these out of market trips. I know that last year Charlie was down in Florida atleast once to oversee what was going on, this year we have had Rozzetti visit and check things over.

Hope to be the one to fix your system John, I'll be leaving this monday morning at 530 am to get headed your way.

Well have a safe trip. I am originally from a little north of Detroit and still own land near Ann Arbor.

It would be great if you were my service guy!

send me a pm john with your location and I will know by wednesday if I am going to be in your area, I may be able to pop over if you are missed on the 19th to get you taken care of.

Heres an update for everyone in florida, as of today there are over 700 + / - technicians in the state not including supporting personnel. My group of nearly 40 techs arrived this evening in miami and will be on the road tomorrow morning servicing existing customers to get them back up and running. Just a simple request or two, be patient as we don't know the area and will be struggling with finding our way around for a few days, and make sure that your address numbers if missing from your home are written on a wood panel or large piece of cardboard with a black marker, and one last thing is that we are going to have a huge workload so we wont have time to chit chat so don't take offense if we drop in and run out.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding to everyone in southern florida that has a service call set up and is expecting us.
