Where are my Satellite Guy's gamers at?

I'm putting my PC today and I'm getting a little confused. For the most part I think I have everything plugged in with the right cables. I only have one thing left and that is the 8 pin plug from the PSU to the CPU on the mother board. The pins do not match up right. Some are square and some are rounded off. What do I do now?

In addition to what yourbeleifs posted I think I can help a little too. I took a look at the picture of your motherboard on the Amazon listing that you can see here. If you hold your mouse over sections of the picture it will zoom in so you can see it better.

I think the cable you are talking about plugs in to the above and to the right of the CPU socket. The slot is labeled ATX_12V. It is just to the right of where it says HDMI Dual Link. You simply have to line it up so the square sections on the power supply cable plug into the square sections on the motherboard.

Edit: looks like you figured it out while I was typing that up. Boot that sucker up and get Windows installed.

Here is a tip if you plan on playing with a TV from across the room. When you set your PC to output 1080p everything will look extremely small at that distance. If you go into the resolution settings in windows and click make text and other items larger or smaller you can fix that problem. I have mine set to the larger 150% setting and that makes everything much more readable from the couch. There are a few rogue programs like Origin that don't seem to change in size no matter which setting I choose but most stuff works without any other adjustments. I also manually changed the font size in Firefox to make the rare occasion where I need to browse for troubleshooting help easier to read.

Another tip. My TV had a bit of an overscan problem with my PC. It cuts a bit off each side and this isn't something I noticed while watching TV or playing console games. On the PC it would cut off about 75% of the task bar and part of the icons on the outer edges. Luckily the AMD Catalyst software that comes with your GPU drivers has overscan settings because Windows doesn't seem to have any natively built in. I was able to drag a slider until the PC image perfectly fit my TV screen without having to give up my 1080p resolution. This may or may not be a problem on your TV.

Aren't you glad you built it yourself now? You get a lot more power for your dollar and the satisfaction of knowing you got the exact parts you wanted and put it together yourself. Now you just need to start keeping an eye out for those PC deals. If you are patient enough you can get all the big multiplatform games you want to play in the $10-$25 range. You will get lots of great indies in the $5 or under range and sometimes even some AAA games under $10.

Soon you will be checking Steam at 1:00 ET daily, the Humble Bundle every 2 weeks on Tuesday at 2:00 ET, and the Humble Weekly bundle every Thursday at 2:00. Outside of that you just need to watch the video game deals thread and wait for yourbeleifs to post other random sales from around the internet. Now that you got the initial hardware costs out of the way you will be able to play tons of games at a fraction of the price it would have cost you as a console gamer.

Are you nuts? All he has to do is ask if anyone has any unused Steam keys and he'll be set until the Second Coming..;p

True. I would recommend Mirror's Edge, Crysis 2, and Spec Ops: The Line as a starting point from my own collection of extra game codes.

Edit: FEZ and Limbo are both good games that I have codes for as well.

That was me and one of my co-workers after it turned on and I saw the picture on screen. It really wasn't bad but I'm not done yet. I need to download all of the current drivers for my parts I think.

The main one to focus on is the AMD Catalyst software for your GPU. This is how you change all the graphics settings and you will occasionally want to use it to update your GPU drivers. Most of the other stuff should work with the generic drivers Windows already installed. You might need to look for hardware specific drivers if you are having issues like the audio glitch I was experiencing on the generic driver but Windows does a pretty good job of getting everything up and running quickly for the most part.

So you would recommend that I go to MSI and download the most recent driver for my GPU?

No. MSI is one of many manufacturers that make graphics cards on the AMD specs. I would get them from the AMD site because it will come with the AMD Catalyst software that automatically detects your GPU and gets the correct drivers for it. You can then use it to change settings and get future driver updates easily.

Is it plugged all the way in? That's part of the motherboard so it's not like you could have messed something up there. I would pull it out and firmly reseat it and then restart the computer. If that doesn't work you may need to install the drivers for your motherboard. The generic drivers windows installed may be causing issues.

I unplugged it and restarted the pc a couple times. The odd thing is it worked earlier. I think I plugged it in while it was on and messed something up. I'll check the driver for the mother board though.

I'm using a wireless USB keyboard instead of the old PS/2 style keyboard but I bought the same brand motherboard for both of my recent builds. They each came with a DVD full of drivers for all the on board hardware. If yours came with one of those I would try loading it.

I just decided to order a cheap microsoft keyboard from amazon for $12.99. I'll have it friday.

Ouch! Two more days before you can see what that thing can do? You certainly have more patience than I do. I would be in the car on my way to the nearest target/walmart/whatever to get a cheap USB keyboard as soon as I decided the MB drivers weren't going to fix it.

I forgot to bring the motherboard disc home. I went to their website and I'm not sure what I need to download.
