When will E*'s MPEG4 only SAT be up and running?

The only way it seems for E* to be able to go toe to toe with D* is with their MPEG4 only SATS…what is the timeframe to have this up and running?

How much bandwidth do you think it will give them?

There is no such thing as a mpeg-4 only satellite
Let me rephrase it for Paradox-SJ...

"The only way it seems for E* to be able to go toe to toe with D* is with their SATS for MPEG4 only Service…what is the timeframe to have this up and running?

:)

Its one of those things that if you long for it, it will take forever. I expect Dish to be able to provide a few more channels by the end of year (six maybe twelve) and they they would bottom out. D* should be able to keep going strong in the meantime being more constrained by weak offerings than by their own capacity.

But by this time next year, Dish should be back in business.

So no one knows when the two SATS that are rumored to be used for a MPEG4 parallel service are to go into service?
As I understand it the next launch is in hold because of an explosion of the same model booster rocket and the investigation now ongoing.

E* has 2 new sats going up "soon". SeaLaunch will be launching E11. E* is third in line for a launch but may move up if the Boeing sats (same as D10) in front of E* have to be pulled for repairs. AMC-14 (leased to E*) is to be launched by ILS from Baikonur. The Proton launch vehicle just had a mishap and all launches are on hold. Both sats should be launched within 6 - 8 months (with luck). After E11 is launched and reaches 110, E* will be able to rearrange the existing sats to start up the mpeg4 only service. So look for the mpeg4 only service to begin 3rd quarter 2008.

Thank you Voyager6....:)

And Superdish was going to carry 50 hi-def channels.

E* plans could change 10 times long before they get an "MPEG4 Only" satellite up.

They could also first get the remainder of the hi-def channels converted to mpeg4.

Then, they could free up a bunch of conus bandwidth by getting the hi-def locals at 61 and 129 switched to spot beams (hi-def locals on conus beams is a ridiculous waste of bandwidth).

Duplication of Hi-Def channels on 61 and 129 also irks me. If the location of the sat doesn't allow it to cover the entire country it should be used for locals (or regional sports).

Bottom line - A lot of things could happen here. Probably lots of things going on behind the scenes we don't know about.

Remember that when DISH started about 11 years ago, there was no talk of hd. THey were mostly trying to supply a cable like experience with satellite. Then the locals push began . Then towards the late 90s we got our first hd channel or two. My point is that DISH is dealing with new technology and demands , channels , etc using existing 20 century setup. I am sure if they had it to do over again and they knew then, what they know now ,they would of done a lot of things different.

But that being said , I've never understood why they duplicated international channels on so many satellites at the same time. How much demand can there be for these in America anyway? But at least they are now pushing all internationals to the 118.5 sat. THat leaves 105 and 121 with nothing to do now. I guess they could stop paying rent on 105 but they own 121. Poor planning. Maybe they could change the orbit on 121 and use it somehow with the hd channels. The 129 sat situation is stupid and shouldn't be allowed to go on. I know they wanted a one dish solution for hd and national cable channels but most people end up needing either 61.5 or a second dish that is bigger for 129 anyway. My 1000.2 dish is useless for me as I can not use 129 due to the signal dropouts on this sat. So I have aluminum foil over the 129 lnb and use a side sat dish for 61.5 . IF they wanted to fix the situation they could duplicate the 129 national hd to the 148 sat. It was set up to mirror for the west coast anyway for hd when they started so why not continue the process. IT isn't like most people aren't using 2 dishes anyway to avoid the dreaded drop outs on 129. As to duplication look at what they have been doing for most of the last 11 years in regards to internationals. I would think that hd duplication would be only for this year till they get up and running on the mpeg4 service.

When they do their MPEG-4 service next year, what are they going to do about the locals that are on 129? Are they going to put all of those locals on the new satellite slots? We have already went from having a SuperDish to having a Dish1000 in this market for locals (we can still get them on 105 or 129 here). 129 is very hard to pickup here though so I am glad that they still have 105 as a solution.

According to the team summit last May the new sats will have room for upto 200 hd national channels, 100 hd dma locals , all existing sd locals & national channels , all existing international channels- all can be received on one 18" sat dish looking at two new sats in mpeg 4. So everything today will be duplicated in mpeg 4 on the new sats. So eventually I suppose they can use the existing dish 500 setup to do the same thing that they will do with 86.5 and 97 in mpeg4. MAybe then they could offer a west coast time zone for all national channels? But if both DISH and Directv are slow to change over all sd locals to their digital counterparts as they have already reported publicly that they might be late, it won't much matter anyway after 2/17/09 as No one will be able to see them .

I wonder how they expect two orbital slots to be picked up from an 18" dish? Or is it going to be the 18x20 Dish500?

It will also take more satellites than the 2 they are launching to fully utilize the new slots. They will need 2 E10 class spot beam satellites launched to be able to carry all the local markets from these 2 slots. E8 if moved only has 25 max. Using 2 new DBS slots would give them 64 TPs. Assuming they are able to carry 25 LiL HD markets on 5 TPs on E8, they would have 59 TPs to carry national, or 354 HD at 6/TP. They would of course lose 6 channels/local. Assuming they want to carry top 50 initially, they would need 25 TPs for LiL (+ the 25 on E8 over 5 national TPs). This would leave 34 TPs for national or 192 HD channels max.

So, without more satellites going up, they are going to be severely limited in what they can do. They are of course building more satellites, so they will be building capacity as they get the new satellites done.
