Calling all FTA'ers! Calling all FTA'ers! ;)

If you have an FTA system with a circular LNB and have line of sight to 82W I'd like to ask a favor of you guys spread out across the US. In the Canadian Satellite forums we are trying to figure out the footprint of the 82W satellite. ExpressVu has recently made some changes with their Nimiq satellites and their leased DirecTV satellites. This adjustment has caused some of the southern subscribers to lose some of their HD channels. Some of the members are contemplating purchase and installing a larger dish(1m, 1.2m, etc) to receive the channels but would like to make sure it's worth it first. If you could please take a moment to grab a few signal readings and post the following information:

1. Dish setup - LNB type, dish size, etc.

2. General location in the US you can include a zip code if you like.

3. FTA receiver type (as our quality meters all differ)

4. Signal strength/quality on the 32 TP's located at 82W. If you cannot pickup a TP please note this. Refer to http://www.lyngsat.com/nimiq2.html for frequency to TP conversions. The following TP conversions are not listed: 12325-TP8, 12630-TP29, 12660-TP31. Please list your strengths as follows:

1 - 45
2 - 47
3 - 45
4 - 60
5 - 89
6 - 0
7 - 72
8 - 45
9 - 90
10 - 0
11 - 74
12 - 47
13 - 42
14 - 45
15 - 45
16 - 50
17 - 32
18 - 45
19 - 34
20 - 45
21 - 45
22 - 0
23 - 32
24 - 45
25 - 90
26 - 45
27 - 60
28 - 45
29 - 88
30 - 44
31 - 75
32 - 45

Once we do this then possibly we can help the members with a few tips and possibly photos for setting up these larger dishes.

***NOTE***: We are not hacking ExpressVu at 82W we are simply reading the signal strength/quality. As always...NO HACK TALK!!

And thanks again for taking your time to do this!

Thanks, Digiblur.....key transponders in question are 7, 11, and 27 which include HD signals from NBCW, FOXW, CTV, TSN, and a movie channel amongst others.

Do you mean Nimiq2 at 82 or Nimiq1?

I'll post mine tonight but its moot as I am in Minnesota (heck, I'm farther north than Toronto) :)

Ice, you are far enough north that you could probably get 100% on all tp's with a 12" foil plate! :)

Would there be noticeable signal loss if I ran RG6 from Florida to your house?!! :D

actually I know when I had ExpressVu the signals with a 20" weren't all that flattering. I had about a 60 on my EVu 3100. It went up to a 75 when I added the 24"

get quad shield :)

Well here we go

This is using a 30" Winegard dish, a Invacom Quad LNB and a Fortec Classic (The Coolsat meter suck so I used the Fortec..max is 100) in the backwoods of Minnesota (20 miles SW of Minneapolis)

And contrary to popular belief, it is not peggin the meter.

Here are some notes
TP 6, 10 & 22 are ZIPPO, NADA, NONE
TP 7 & 9 were my highest (91)

These were low (under 60)
TP 15
TP 13
TP 23
TP 28
TP 32
All were about 56

The rest were at about 70-72

Most of my Nimiq 1 TP's are between 90-99

Typo: Nimiq Dos ;)

Interesting to note that Most of my EVEN Nimiq TPs are in the 90s, but the ODDS are in the 50s or low 60s, except for a few exceptions (mid teens and high 20s-30s)that are in the high 90s as well.

I recently changed over to a QPH-031 LNB. Wow! What a difference!

With this big increase I'm actually thinking of trying see how much trouble/paperwork it is to get BEV in this area.

Digiblur, those are nearly identical to my results (not surprising, since we are only about 80 miles from each other...)

I used to think that my view of 82w was hampered by a nearby tree, but then read here that it is weaker than other DBS birds. It didn't really matter much, since there's not much useful on that bird. In the past, I've found some interesting temporary stuff (which will not be mentioned in open forum, of course)..

And it wasn't the tree, because its now gone thanks to Katrina and the results haven't changed :)

I was in Daytona Beach this weekend for a hockey tournament, and brought my 39" elliptical for tailgating and watching the playoffs.
Locked it in on 82, and TSN-HD and SN-HD came in beautifully.

So as I had guessed in another thread, the east coast footprint cutoff is somewhere between Tampa/Daytona and Ft. Myers/Miami.

Looking at Pro96's readings for So.Cal on a 90cm dish. I'm wondering if that is the best for California as a whole. I live in the Sacramento area and currently have a Toroidal 90 and I don't get readings like those. I have thoughts about replacing the lnbf, but where to find a high-quality low degree reverse head is beyond me. Is there any other options I have to get the most HD out of Bev, or should I jump ship and migrate to *C?

Have any of our fellow FTA'ers in South Florida tried to lock on all the transponders at 82? Someone told me that they thought a guy with a 6 foot dish was able to pull them all in.

Thanks.

Something seems to tell me a solid 6 footer would have no problems picking up Nimiq 82W. :)

Is it just me or are signal strengths down in Southern California on 82 transponders 5 & 9? I posted on a separate thread that I had installed a 90cm dish to restore SN-HD, CTVHD-E and CTVHD-W after the transponder shuffle a few weeks back. I was receiving signals in the mid-40's, which was barely enough to grab onto, but was adequate with the generally clear weather we have here.

However, the past two days, the signal has dropped to around 40 and is now locking and unlocking, rendering it virtually impossible to watch.

Should I climb back up to the roof to tinker, or is this a part of more Expressvu machinations?

I am now having trouble with T7-11-27-31 on 82W. The signal is in the 40s and the popup on my 6000 is screaming that the signal is lost. I am going to try and retweak tommorrow, but this is lower than before.

I spent a bit of time tweaking this afternoon and even installed a new LNB, just in case this was the problem. There was no change and unless I have a problem with trees, then I'm afraid that Bell only made things worse for us in the Southern US.
